Valve: "Room-scale tracking just the beginning ... 'house-scale' tracking in the future"

Here's the full quote:

Valve’s Chet Faliszek confirmed today via Twitter that the new SteamVR Tracking base stations will be backwards compatible with existing devices like the HTC Vive, and ostensibly with third-party SteamVR Tracking devices currently in development. Better tracking and a wider field of view are exciting developments for any VR tracking technology, but Valve says that today’s ‘room-scale’ tracking is just the beginning. The company has in the past said that the technology could support more than two base stations at a time. At the media briefing, Valve president Gabe Newell said that the company expects “house scale” tracking in the future, thanks to the ability to “knit together these [tracking] volumes into an arbitrarily large volume.”
What?! This article was about a gen 2 lighthouse base station. But I was more intrigued by the mention of "house-scale" tracking and how that could possibly be applied.  I'm thinking a VR horror game that adapts itself to your home's floor plan, kind of like those old dungeon crawler CRPGs with randomly-generated maps.  That would be creepy.  And possibly creep out other family members.  Have to give some credit to Valve/HTC for pushing the envelope.  Competition is good.

Rift-S, Quest 128GB, GO 64GB.

Oh that would be just awesome, now when you wake up in the night...MAYBE IT WASN'T JUST A NIGHTMARE!

Yeah I saw that last wk and was thinking that was just a dumb idea.  I would rather wait for AR glasses and walk around and do stuff that set 30 sensors up in my house…lol.

According to some, house scale is not relevant until Rift starts to support it.

I'd be amazed if house-scale is ever relevant at all in VR. That's an AR target surely - perfect for inside-out tracking and overlayed display.

maybe they should focus on wireless
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on forums?

I think the idea of rewiring and labelling that rack would be the ultimate nightmare !

Next on the news: "Vive confirmed world-scale in 2018 and universe-scale in 2020."

Space in real life is not limitless. Valve will understand that at some point.

I don't see a consumer usage for that. Even room scale isn't for everyone. Not the Vive is expensive. Space is expensive. And you can't make games for it.

Expading "room-scale" is not the future.
Excuse my bad english. I speak to you through the google translator. 😛
