Vanguard V - Not getting the attention this game deserves?

They didn't do themselves a favor by setting such an insanely high goal, but if you can ignore that, I think the project is still worth backing. I've been testing out various DK2 ready demos, backing several Kickstarters, etc - many of which are getting a lot of attention here, but I'm surprised to see so little discussion on Vanguard V. This is right up there with Technolust as far as polish/attention to detail goes, but much more approachable for the masses. The control scheme almost ensures you don't get motion sickness. Long store short: If you haven't yet checked this game out yet, do so now.

  • Beautiful graphics

  • Awesome soundtrack

  • Fantastic voice action

  • Slick HUD

  • Easy to get into gameplay

  • Doesn't produce much if any motion sickness

I've backed it the first day it started 🙂

I feel like the developer is fighting an uphill battle, but I actually believe they can create a very high quality game. The demo alone is quite impressive. I really hope this game gets more attention.

Interesting... but two things put me off right away after watching the video clip.

Asking $207 US dollars for a demo is a ridiculous amount for a game that looks ordinary not fantastic , reminded me of a REZ rip-off which is not a bad thing but to attract backers it needs appropriate pricing. I paid about $135 Aussie dollars to buy into Elite Dangerous but there is no comparison in terms of value as Elite is absolutely fantastic.

The second has more to do with personal taste but for me, the music on the video clip was absolutely ear wrenching & nauseatingly horrible (I really hated it!) so if that is indicative of the in-game music I would turn it OFF right away.

Otherwise I wish him luck as he is gonna need it to reach his $198,000 target by the due date.

He asks $1 for the demo.
$207 is the amount of Paypal donations he received so far.

... oops my bad  Yeah you are right, the page is so busy with info that when I scanned it is saw that paypal button with $207 highlighted right above it and Proton Pulse above that so I got confused

Ok a dollar for a demo is fine but my other comments still stand and unfortunately there are just too many better games out there for me, personally I think a free demo would hook more people in and he is gonna struggle to get $182,000 with 18 days left for backing 😮

Just pay the dollar for the demo and try it out. I think you'll be surprised by the production value.

A couple of things bug me in their kickstarter. Not seriously, but enough of a nuisance anyways.

First, nothing is said about the actual developers until you scroll down a *whole* lot. There's a whole two pages of scrolling related to people making the music that I just don't care about. If music is that pivotal, link me one track and move on. Same with the listing of voice actors. I don't know any of these people (and I play a *lot* of games), and honestly if you could cut a few of them and help that insane budget you'd more than likely be better off.

Second, after going through musicians and voice actors I go through Characters/Levels/ *and rewards* before I actually learn who's making the thing, which is honestly the only thing I really care about. And one person is a picture of a dog? This is supposed to be professional.

Third, all these pictures are resized all crazy. They don't match the same size, and honestly it's hard to look at and read.

Fourth, the art direction is all over the place. There's 3d models, followed by .gifs and sprite animation, etc.

Fifth and finally, that budget is pretty ridiculous for a niche game developed specifically for the Rift. Almost 200k? How many Rifts were sold? And how many people bought multiple Rifts? I just don't think that there's that many enthusiasts or developers out there to back this much. In my honest opinion, I hope they drop some of the musicians/VA and come back at this with a lower budget.

Actually, I just looked over the budget they've posted. 20k for Music and VA. 10k to develop for Morpheus, a device that might not even see a consumer release?

I don't know, I wish them the best, but this one seems a little far-fetched.

I've tried a lot of demos (including The Deep and Street Luge on Morpehus) and I have to say that this is by far the most successful attempt I have seen of something being made specifically for the hardware available to us at this time. It's true that the funding goal is pretty ambitious and I fear that may be their downfall but it'll be a real shame if this guy doesn't get the support he needs to move forward. Both this and his other demo (Proton Pulse) show a huge amount of potential in regards to creating some really engaging arcade type experiences that genuinely suit the rift experience as it exists right now. I feel like we need more immediately effective stuff like this to get the ball rolling and win over a larger audience for VR in general.

A free demo might have been more inviting but $1 is not a huge sum to contribute to be able to make an informed decision. Trust me, it's a pretty unique experience in terms of gameplay and it 'works' more so than anything else I've tried to date.

In all honesty I'm not sold on the music and if I were to be critical there are other stylistic elements that are not entirely to my taste either. Aesthetically, I relate far more to something like Technolust but in terms of actual functionality Vanguard V is way more fun to play right now. Of everything I have shown people on the DK2 so far, this is the demo that people want to play over and over.

It took one play through for me to go back and pay the full amount for the game, partly because I'm intrigued to see a fully fleshed out version but also because this guy has proven himself capable of delivering some pretty unique content so far and more than anything I want to see what other projects may follow.

One other issue; I have no problem donating the 1$ to play the game, but I ordered my DK2 *way* late in the game. The campaign ends in 18 days, and right now 3/4 of the people that have ordered don't have the Rifts yet!

Tempted to bust out the DK1 though, if it is compatible...
