Vive - Room Scale And Smaller Play Areas

Hello all,

For Vive owners! (can't post on the Reddit sub forum yet and I know there are some Vive users here!)

I have read a few reviews and comments from developers who absolutely love room scale and have nothing but praise for it, but suggest you really need to have the biggest play area possible to get the most out of it or you will run in to constant chaperone issues, hitting walls with the wands, tracking issues and so on.

This got me a little concerned so thought I would gather some opinions from Vive owners with smaller play spaces.

I can probably squeeze a place space of approx 8x10ft, which would be basically by moving a single chair out of my gaming room and using the space inside of where my PC desk and TV cabinet are situated.

How do you think I would get on with a place space of this size? It is worth the investment in regards to room scale with a space this size?

Ps. I understand that you can use the Vive sitting and standing. This is just in respect to games that utilise room scale.

Thanks!

This is similar size (slightly bigger) to my 2m x2m space if I have the maths correct and for me this is fine. You can still walk around objects and swing arms about without fear of hitting anything (when you are centred). According to the room set up this is probably the minimum size.

Go for it!

Thanks for your reply @Shadowmask72

Hmm, your's is about 6.5 x 6.5ft then?

What do you have outside of your play area boundary? I have my PC monitor and a flat screen TV. I read even though the chaperone helps with stopping you from going outside of your play area, you may purposely or inadvertently extend your arms outside of this area, thus cracking your controller against the wall or worse, putting a hole in your TV.

Have you had any issues like this?

From what I've seen most of the room scale games so far the minimum looks to be 3mx3m (9ftx9ft) and if you don't meet the requirments the game may not even launch. Some games want more space as their minimum. If you look at steams vr section the games that have room scale do have their minimum requirements on the page as well.

What I don't know yet is what if you are more than enough on one side but not the other. E.G. if the game says minimum is 4mx4m and you have a room that is 3mx8m is that good enough or do both of the sides need to meet minimum.

@marikcraven actually the minimum is 2mx2m.  I have a 2m x 2.5m space and all the room-scale content thus far works perfectly.

I have all sorts of expensive electronics just outside my playable area, and the chaperone boundaries make sure all of them stay nice and safe 🙂

What about a game like Unseen Diplomacy? It says 3mx4m. I'm not expecting you to get it if you aren't interested but in situations like this would the game even load? And what if my area of play is 10ftx11ft? Can I play it or no?

@SickleFoot I have been meaning to throw a little something out on youtube but haven't gotten around to it.  I will try and get something done this weekend.

@marikcraven I haven't seen that one yet.  The Vive config program has the minimum for room-scale even smaller at 2m x 1.5m, so I am guessing most content will keep that in mind.  I have quite a few room-scale games already and every single one works perfect in 2.5m x 2m.  Games like Hover Junkers work around everyone's playable space from standing room only to huge bus-sized areas, so I suppose in the long run it will be up to the devs.
