[...]CEO Cher Wang teased that two weeks ago, Valve and her team made "a very, very big technological breakthrough" with their virtual reality system, so big that they decided to just skip the original version and ship this new one, albeit missing the Q1 date.[...]

What could it be?
Excuse my bad english. I speak to you through the google translator. 😛

no more occlusion since now there is a camera on the front so, there is additional tracking capabilities.

The link is on the first page of this thread, under the big picture.

Look at the old Vive, it was already there.

I thought two forward facing cameras were already confirmed long ago, they were just blocked in the current dev kit?

Sounds like PR...

Unless they come out and say they are switching to dual 4k screens with 160 degree feel of view and can render triple AAA games on current hardware, I doubt I will be impressed by their "big tech breakthrough" that is only delaying shipping by a few months...

Still though I reserve the right to be pleasantly surprised.

I doubt it is higher res screens, that will increase the already quiet high Min system specs required for the Vive and will reduce their market share even more.

I don't see them changing the tracking system this late in the game.

If I had to make a guess it's a better chaperone system as someone else stated or they have some how improved the FOV dramatically.

They have to have something other than PR, if they turn up at CES and it turns out to be a PR stunt they will be a laughing stock.

Why wait till now to give a reason for the delay ? wouldn't it have been better to say this when they first announced the delay ? something smells fishy to me.

I wonder if it has anything to do with this ?

my guess is you can see the keyboard thru those frontal cameras

While that would be nice and handy, I don't see it as a breakthrough.

Tbh I don't care if they've added a feature so that it makes a cup of tea in the morning...the BIGGEST problem (and they have a few of them, listed below in order of importance) they have is what's likely to be the retail price of the thing.

They have a lot to do to have any chance of competing with Oculus:

1) Due to the Lighthouse bits and bobs it's going to be more expensive to produce and will be more expensive to buy.

2) Developers have had devkits for, what? A year? Developers have had Rift devkits for twice as long, and as a result the Rift will launch with more software available.

3) Oculus have a good few exclusives coming to the Rift.

4) The Rift is going to launch with a quality pack-in game.

Unless they've come up with some way to deal with problem number one it doesn't matter if they've increased the FOV or resolution, if it's too expensive it could end up being the Betamax of the VR world unless the porn industry supports Vive ahead of the Rift. :?

It is the camera. It may be a spherical 3d one. More specific they found a way to map it correctly inside VR despite the offset to the eyes, for a true 1:1 see-trough, so everything is aligned. Great for AR.

I hope that camera on the headset can do basic hand tracking. I am so looking forward to hand representation in VR and interacting with the virtual environment.
