Vive shipping in "larger quantities" in Q1 2016

Well, there it is. I've long suspected that the gap between Rift and Vive release dates would shrink to the point of being negligible. And now Valve is stating this:

“Later this year, HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems, with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016.”

So, we can basically take this as both the Rift and Vive shipping in Q1 2016. Sounds like it will be just to devs at the end of 2015.

Saw this on Gizmodo:

I was thinking they were going to have to scale back a bit too.

Not really a shock considering HTC's financial issues and the lack of info we have seen or heard about the Vive consumer version, also still waiting on Steambox and steam controller, their track record for releasing hardware is not the greatest.

Considering that Palmer has also stated the possibility of Touch launching around the same time as CV1 there's a very good chance that the Vive will lose most of its upper hand. It won;t affect my decision to buy both very much as I really want the Vive demos I tried. But this will likely make a huge difference to people who were purchasing the Vive because it was coming out first.

HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems,

Since supply is limited, I'm hoping that they have some kind of application process and give priority to active developers and youtubers.

Otherwise I can imagine a small group of people buying all the units and reselling them. That would not be good at all.

So Vive is delayed? What a surprise 😉 Lot of persons stated this at the first announcement, saying they never respected any dates given 😉

And the Vive could be more expensive than the Oculus one, both released around same period? Mmmmmm, not good for the Vive. If it was first the price will not be a problem, but having competitors same quality (but "lighthouse" which I don't care at all)... My choice is made.

I've looked and can't find it, so let's say for now that I imagined it. But the way I remember it, it was not anything too surprising as it was basically just saying that if Touch is ready early enough in H1 2016 it could overlap with the launch of CV1 in Q1. I'll keep my eye out for the quote.

This is unfortunate but somewhat expected. Let's hope the first batch gets at least a few Vives into consumer hands.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.
