Flight sim fans rejoice! 😄

At that point, I was already well versed with the Oculus Rift, though not quite sold on the experience it offered. War Thunder changed everything, however. From a first-person view, I slowly made my way into the open skies as the lightly cologned man instructed me on all the different triggers. Once I gained enough air, he told me to spin which, sequentially, had my world turn as if I were in fact soaring through the sky. My surroundings, the beautiful vistas, forests and rivers below, swum around me as I rotated my head in awe. Finally, the Rift has a game worth bragging about.

The article itself does not say DK1 or DK2, but in the comments, one user asks if it was DK1 or 2 and the author replies it was DK2: (He also thinks a DK3 is VERY likely... Make of that what you will...)

DK2, which made the experience the great one it was.

But wait... There's more!

It’s hard to explain the overwhelming emotions felt during my session in the sky, even as flames arose from my engine. It’s the most convincing unreality I’ve ever been in. Confusing, I know. War Thunder, an already immensely enjoyable game, and most certainly one I’ll be hopping into again, is also the first title to sell me on the Oculus Rift.
But... but... but... I just NEED to know about the Baba! The Baba has me hypmotized!

I just tried War Thunder with the DK2.
I couldn't get positional tracking to work at all - also it seemed like the eye divergence was a bit off or something as I had to concentrate quite hard not to get double vision. I never had that problem with the DK1 on older versions.

Is there something you have to do to get positional to work?

The nice thing is this game runs really smooth, even with my rather ancient PC.

The good news is War Thunder now works with the DK2.

The bad news is War Thunder doesn't really work with DK2... just for the reasons you mentioned.

I get pos tracking, but I do see weird IDP settings

As for DCS, no joy. Starting the game in extended mode the game stops.

It doesn't freeze or lock up. I just sit in the aircraft (In this case I'm doing Huey training missions) and can look around. But the lesson or mission does not start and I have a yellow "+" for a mouse pointer.

Any ideas?

Its utterly mindblowing, and also flatout depressing that there are virtually zero flight simulators geared specifically for the Oculus.

Sounds like a good dev opportunity

Yellow "+" is the cursor you get when you are in an aircraft with clickable cockpit.
To start the game just press the "pause" key on your keyboard.

Not unexpected, considering the Oculus isn't a consumer product yet. It takes years and alot of cash to develop a decent flight simulator, not to mention the fact the genre is too small to generate much income. DCS, WT, and BOS and hopefully COD, will eventually have Oculus support. A third party now has the rights to develop a flight simulator using the Microsoft FSX engine, so I'm confident they will look seriously at Oculus or other VR support. How well they'll be able to convert these established game engines for VR support is anyones guess.

If anything can reinvigorate the flight sim market its probably VR. If VR draws more people to the genre, then we might see more developers interested in spending the time and money to gear a flight sim specifically for the Oculus.
