Hey all,

Im just speccing up a new GPU for my system. I have narrowed it down to about 4 units im interested in. And I would value some of your input in my selections.

They are all within a similar price range, the Gigabyte being the cheapest by about £30 and the new Radeon the most expensive by about £40.

KFA2 Geforce GTX 780Ti HOF 3072MB GDDR5 - £559

Inno3D GeForce GTX 780Ti iChill OC 3072MB GDDR5 - £559

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780Ti WindForce 3x OC 3072MB GDDR5 - £529

Sapphire Radeon R9 290X Vapor-X OC 8192MB GDDR5 - £599

Many thanks

This card does not hold back, with up to 450W of dedicated GPU power,

Stupid, they are advertising high power consumption as a good thing. Fuck EVGA for that.
The trend to stock overclocked cards highlights what's wrong in this industry, moores law has been essentially stalled when it comes to gpu chips. Increased demand from the mobile sector makes insane profit margins for AMD & NVIDIA.

Well assuming two GPUs are just as efficient as each other, one is capable of pumping out 450w worth of heat, and another only 200w, the one pumping out 450w is obviously able to work harder...

key words being "just as efficient"

now if one of the cards is only using that much power because its got poor quality parts, and needs to be clocked higher to achieve the same performance as another card, that is bad.

Its interesting to quote linus from his fantastic tech series, 'if you are not overclocking shame on you'.

I hope VR boom will envigorate NVidia to do better pricing strategies for high end gpu's.
Specifically that they stop the silly high end prices. We now need as much gpu power as possible
not the i've got the biggest wanking marketplace.

I remember when $500 for a top-of-the-line GPU sounded outrageous. Now, that's a deal.

I still don't think the average PC enthusiast is running out and buying high end video cards for $500 dollars because they are a good deal...

It is only half way to crazy now a days but its still far from an impulse purchase. The price of a good video card has certainly crept up since the early 2000's.

So has the complexity.... a 6800 had 222 million transistors... the gtx 780ti has over 7 billion.

they definitely are inflated prices, but i wonder how much really? i wonder how much a card actually costs to manufacture and ship?

Their annual report gives some insight to this question

Gross margins for the prior year were 55%. We can thus get a very rough estimate on the cost - 45% of the wholesale price.

This of course doesn't take into account all the other costs they have beyond manufacturing costs - they plow nearly 1/3 of their revenue back in to R&D. Their other G&A costs are at about 10% of their revenue, giving them net margins of about 12%.

so on a 500$ card, 60$ of it is their profits? not much inflation imho...

Guys I am inching closer to building a new PC, the last component I will get is the graphics card, because it seems the prices are so volatile these days on the high-end.

I am currently looking at AMD r290x, since I've heard it has comparative performance to a 780Ti, but is much less. What do you guys have to say about AMD vs. Nvidia? I've heard people have dev issues with graphical glitches using AMD, is that enough of a hurdle to avoid them completely?

Also, what are your thoughts on crossfire vs. SLI. To me, it seems crossfire is more future-proof, since it allows cards within the same family to operate in crossfire, whereas Nvidia SLI only allows the same chipset. But is Nvidia more stable? Please share your thoughts.
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on forums?

Lots of people swear by Nvidia, but I find AMD cards to be competitive. Especially when you consider price.
