What programs to download/buy for first time rift user?

Hey guys,
My rift bundle should be here tomorrow...But I'd like to have the programs set up tonight so I can hop right on to playing.

I'm wondering what programs I need to download to optimize the rift experience. I have no problem buying the programs, just as long as they're something that would deem useful.

I thought I saw something about a program called "Oculus home" or something for $16 USD

I'm also interested in streaming videos, movies, porn. So what programs would I need for that?

Oculus Home is free. It wants you to connect the Rift when you install it though (might be skippable, not sure if that's at all recommended, though you can run the set up at any time later). Aside from installing games and other software available on Oculus Home though there's really not much point installing it now, and most VR
experiences are only a handful of gigabytes to download so pretty quick if you have decent internet.

There's several free and some paid movie players on Oculus Home, Steam has some as well. Don't know if any of them do streaming, and can't help you with porn.

Get the Oculus Tray Tool too, it's a sticky post here in the forum. But get Oculus Home installed and running first. The tray tool is the best thing you can use to "optimise" the experience.

The Lab, Rec Room, Bigscreen Beta & SportsBar VR ..... All available via Steam, the first three are free.

I dont have my rift yet but when it arrives the above are some of the first things i will be checking out. Remember you get a bunch of free content with your bundle(6 games i think). Robo Recall, Dead & Buried & medium and the three im looking forward to most from the free content.

Download and install the free stuff now so that it's ready for when you get it tomorrow.

As for recommendations, it all depends on what sort of games you like tbh and how resistant you are to simulation sickness. A good way to gauge this is to play Lucky's Tale after you've set up your Rift and gone through the tutorials. Whilst you try out Lucky's Tale, if you start to feel a LITTLE odd or uncomfortable when the screen scrolls then STOP IMMEDIATELY by pressing the Oculus button on the right Touch controller to bring you to the Oculus Menu. Keeping your headset on whilst you do this you need to take a few long breaths and relax yourself, and THEN remove the headset.

Next you want to take a break for at least a few hours, and depending on how rough you feel you might be better off taking a break overnight. Don't try and power through this because your brain will start to associate VR with feeling ill and you'll have a LONG road to get to use VR comfortably again!

If you like cockpit games such as flight and driving sims then you'll LOVE Elite Dangerous, War Thunder (free on Steam), DCS (free on Steam), Euro Truck Simulator 2, American Truck Simulator, Project CARS, Assetto Corsa and DiRT Rally.

If you like horror games then you'll go crazy for Face Your Fears, Dreadhalls (strong VR legs needed), Monstrum (strong VR legs needed), Doom 3 VR Mod, The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter (strong VR legs needed), Narcosis and Wilson's Heart.

For adventure games look no further than Edge Of Nowhere, Chronos, Robinson The Journey, Alice, The Mage's Tale and Lone Echo.

Shooters you'll be interested in Arizona Sunshine, Space Pirate Trainer, SuperHOT VR (although it's more of a puzzle game), Damaged Core, Robo Recall and Dead & Buried. Those last two are free from the Oculus Store.

Puzzle games you've got I Expect You To Die, The Esper Collection and SuperHOT VR.

I've probably missed a load out but those are some of the ones I've got.

Don't forget you can do more than game in your Rift!

Drawing and sculpting in VR is absolutely one of the coolest things you can do!
Try Medium, Quill, and Tilt Brush (all available on Oculus Home, though only the first two are free).

Even if you don't fancy yourself an artist you should give them a go - it's a different experience entirely than just drawing on paper/2d screen, and there's quite a few of us that find it easier and more intuitive than working flat!

The main ones I'd suggest right from the start are these:
  • Robo Recall
  • Gorn (Steam)
  • Oculus Medium
  • Onward (Steam)
  • Tilt Brush
  • Star Trek: Bridge Crew
  • Rec Room
  • Lone Echo/Echo Arena
  • The Lab (Steam)
  • The Pierhead Arcade
  • Bigscreen Beta (Steam)
  • Audioshield (Steam)
There's a mix of free and paid apps in here, but this gives you a great cross section of creative applications, games, and experiences.

I've been playing some of the free games now for awhile, probably about 3 hours and bought H3 and Onward. I've gotten a crazy headache after about 4 hours of playing with the VR.
I'm gunna take a break.

Still want to know about the pornos though, night time is coming.

It may not be a game but it allows you to convert over 100 games that are not VR to VR.
