Title says it all. I only have some crappy logitec mic/headphone phones. Looking for best option. Do i need "surround" headphones or will standard stereo ones be ok? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks for your time! Tim

I use regular iPhone earbuds and they work great IMO, so I wouldn't say you need surround headphones, though they would definitely make it a better experience 😉

Definately buy standard stereo headphones, "surround sound" are overpriced, in other words a good stereo headphone sounds better than an equaly priced surround one. And you can allways apply razers free "virtual surround" software to any headphone. I use sennheiser hd598, didnt like razers surround so I use them stereo and it is very immersive with HL2, assetto corsa, CSGO etc.

This is my goto headphone guide from the helpful people over at /g/. Right now I'm using the Audio Technica AD700 after coming from cheapo Apple earbuds and I'm very happy with the purchase.

Depends on your budget. Honestly, surround sound headphones are either a cheap stereo pair with built in software emulation surround sound, or they use multiple crappy speakers to give you real 5.1 or 7.1 surround. You only have two ears, so it stands to reason that you should only need two speakers, and to let your brain work out the rest.

Most games these days offer a built in headphone surround option. Depending on your budget, I recommend a good pair of over the ear headphones like the AudioTechnica M50s. These are some of the best headphones in the price range, and they easily beat any of mainstream brands like Beats or Turtle Beach. Then again, you may not need or desire a somewhat audiophile solution.

Long story short: You only need stereo headphones, but I recommend a good brand and high-end models.

Here is the original M50 (Same as the m50x, more or less, but without the replaceable cable):

Here is the updated m50x model:

Both of those are great, with only minor differences not related to sound quality. Pick depending on your budget, but you may decide you need or want a shorter or longer cable than the one supplied.

It should also be mentioned that you might wanna stay away from any headphones with a neutral or flat response. While these are generally well received by audiophiles or studios, they offer a somewhat different sound than most people prefer for music/games/movies. They usually are more lacking in bass (Lacking may be an improper word, more like the other brands simply have too much, and we are used to it) than mainstream brands, or natural sounding headphones.

For my earlier suggestion of the M5O, they have a pretty good response on all frequencies, and it is a very pleasing experience for all types of music and gaming, in my experience.

Personally, i've been loving my Logitech G930's. Great sound, wireless, and decently priced.

If the budget permits, Beyerdynamics MX 300's coupled with Asus Xonar Essence ST. My sound is over-the-top great, these two items combined I call "shit-your-pants" sound.
