I know that there are a lot of people asking about when Oculus will start selling extra accessories like the HMD cable etc, if this something that is being planned now (im sure it will be) does anyone know if they are also going to design a longer cable?
Even a breakout box would be a nice accessory to have but I wouldn't mind having a spare HMD cable (since its proprietary) incase one got damaged, and if there was a choice of buying a longer cable I would definitely pick it up.
I think a wireless solution is a very long way off replacing hard wired HMDs completely. Even when they get it perfected you still have battery life etc to throw into the mix, there are a lot of situations where wireless does not add much like sim/driving/seated games. Id rather a stable connection and not have to worry about battery running for these situations.
I would think that they are planning to release spare cables as optional accessories for non warranty damaged cables, and I would like to think they would try and release a longer version too. Maybe HDMI 2.1 with a reported bandwidth of 48Gbps will be able to provide a solution.
Thats true, you can get extensions but users are having mixed results with the extensions. I would prefer to buy a longer official cable. Not just to have a longer cable but so I had a spare cable incase one got damaged.
Im not sure the CV1 was initially designed to be used in larger play area's which would explain the shorter cable that comes with the CV1 but with the popularity of Touch and a lot of people using the 3 and 4 experimental camera setups there would surely be a market for a longer cable.
Extension cables regardless of brand and size have not worked for the headset for me, only the sensors and a hdmi/DVI adapter which used to work now doesn't. I've wasted so much time buying and returning cables I gave up and decided to live with A cable that is a bit too short which is annoying since it tangles. I may try a USB powered hub just out of curiosity, but I never in a million years thought just extending sensors and a headset would be so ridiculously challenging.
@keithianw yeah there doesn't seem to be continuity in what extenders works, what works for some is not working for others and vice versa. Two of my sensors are on 3m USB 3.0 passive extenders and work great. I have tried some different extenders for the HMD cables HDMI & USB and not had much luck.
Im surprised there isn't an option to buy spare cables in the first place even just the standard ones that come with the cv1. Id imagine one of the main reasons a company would go with a proprietary connection would be to make extra income on selling accessories (granted there will be other reasons such the design to fit within space requirements of the headset etc)
I know a lot of people would buy a spare cable as a back up incase their cable got damaged, and im sure if there was the option of a standard size or one that is say a couple of meters longer the majority would go for the longer cable.
My two cents on this matter -extension cables do work up to 15m. Be sure to buy a cable WITHOUT electronics, and make sure the extension and the rift cable alltogether are below that number (i`m using a 10m one). -its unlikely to see oculus branded extension cables since we can't even buy regular spare cables (or remote or anything that could break) -i`m pretty sure there`s no planned enhancement cable sets, i suspect oculus team is working on the CV2 for a good few months by now. Since we all know the limitations of the HDMI standard, it would be rational to think that the next gen hmd will work with DP instead of HDMI.
I'm not saying this is the best idea, but at least more people work on the new stuff.
Apreciate your input @matskatsaba but theres a few things id point out
While extensions are working for you and others they are not working for everyone. I have tried both passive and active HDMI extenders which have not worked.
Im not looking for Oculus branded extensions but a longer cable itself (one to have a longer cable that is specifically designed to work with the CV1 and two so that I have a spare cable in case my cable ever gets damaged), I believe Oculus have said they are working on getting cables available to buy as spares. If this is this case I think with the popularity of Touch and 360 room scale setup's a longer cable can only be an advantageous. My question was sort of in relation to the fact that at the moment we cant buy spare parts like you say, but if they are working on getting the replacements available id like to see them offer up a longer version of the cable.
The CV1 is less than a year old, and it cost a lot of money, I don't think anyone should be expecting CV2 or Vive2 anytime soon, maybe another1-2 years. They will obviously have a team working on developing it but they cant just forget about CV1 that is less than a year old and have only just released Touch controllers last month, if they did there would be a lot of very unhappy customers.
I`m not saying it works for everyone. Since its a consumer product, i imagined some replacement parts will be available of course. I just don`t think a stock long cable or stock extender will see daylight. I mean, it's just physical extension, without electronics, so the cable/connector quality should be the only issue. Others mentioned it too so I didn`t, a wireless solution is in progress too, so i`m pretty sure no longer cable since its still a cable.
