Will VR be the Death of The TV Screen?

In a few of the demos of various products i.e. Hololens, GearVR I have seen representations of large screen displays within the "experience".

Oculus have "Oculus Cinema" which simulates the movie theater experience, and Microsoft can augment a flat screen display onto any wall of home.

Recently Sony spun off its TV division into a separate entity to control costs.

In the longer term I think VR will change the way in which we experience movies, games, and TV but in the medium term it may spell the death for the large TV in the home.

If this is the scenario then I would imagine more of the manufacturers like Panasonic,LG,Philips etc will need to seriously start looking into HMD of their own. >;{}

Definitely not the home TV.

Possibly the cinema, in 10 to 20 years.

Imagine first dates in the Rift: "would you like to go to the movies with me? Well sit over there and put this on your head!"

😄
Big PC, all the headsets, now using Quest 3

No.

First of all it's a budget question. You need one device (and depending on it a PC that can run the device) per person to have the same experience you can have with a single TV. Plus you don't have the reactions of fellow spectators within VR. Then there are people who will inevitably prefer the "good old TV" over that "fancy new stuff" and they will have their way. Just because you can simulate a device within another one doesn't mean the first one gets obsolete. We can watch TV on any laptop, tablet and phone nowadays but people still have the TV at home.
People tend to believe what they want to be true.

No. Though I could see AR eventually replacing standard displays to some extent.

Not in our lifetime.
Not a Rift fanboi. Not a Vive fanboi. I'm a VR fanboi. Get it straight.

Maybe an superlight AR Headset in the far away future will replace the normal TV.
Not a glumpsy VR headset.
See, if you watch a movie with some friends at home, AR is the way, you wann see the other people,
comunicate with them and so on.

Friends I have no friends only minions. 😉

Seriously though it would be cheaper to buy a couple of HMD's than a new TV, the pass through camera could work for looking at other people, I'm not so sure its that far off in the future.
