Will sli help in VR gaming?

I want to use super sampling 2.0 but my current gtx 970 can't handle it. Should I grab gtx 1080 for $600 now or wait for gtx 1080 ti? It is said 1080 ti will be about 30% more powerful than 1080 and it will cost about $700-800. Would current gtx 1080 price drop around next January?

I am so confused now. I want to upgrade my gpu but not sure I should be getting 1080 now. Also, would sli help in VR gaming and super sampling and fps? If so, I would also consider 1070 sli. Let me know.

Thanks. 😄

SLI is not supported at all, and can actually cause issues (may be broken at the moment).

Ok. Just bought gtx 1080 from local micro center to test it and it seems it runs a lot better than gtx 970. I set super sampling to 2x and it ran just fine most of the time. But it's still not good enough to run virtual desktop msaa 8x. Frame rate drops to 45 fps. It gets 90 fps till msaa 4x though. It's definitely a improvement but I am still 100% convinced I should keep gtx 1080. I will play with it for few more days and decide whether I keep gtx 1080 or wait for 1080 ti.

You will always get fewer compatibility issues with a single GPU even with non VR games. I would get the 1080 today if I was in your shoes.

I reluctantly picked up a top of the line 980Ti when I got my Rift in April, even though I knew prices will drop once 1060/1070/1080 get released in June. Of course prices dropped as expected but I used credit card price protection benefit and got a check for $170 difference in price in July. I could have waited from April to June and bought a 1080 but instead I got to enjoy my new Rift. That and the price match was worth it for me.

Personally I am not upgrading from 980Ti to 1080, will wait for 1080Ti.

NVidia has "VR SLI", which supposedly works great - it has each card render one eye, rather than the current method of each card rendering every other scan line (which adds latency the way it works). But a game has to be developed to support VR SLI, and the SDK to do so has yet to be released for the Unity game engine that most VR developers use, and is only barely released for Unreal Engine 4 (you have to build your own copy of UE4 using a special branch made by nVidia)

You may want to read up on how super sampling and MSAA work as the settings you are putting on are crazy insane and probably won't look as good as you believe.

Wouldn't the 45fps be ASW kicking in ?

Yeah, like Cyber mentioned, 2x SS + 8x MSAA is bonkers.  If you are running at 90fps with 2x SS + 4x MSAA, you are in rather good shape and seeing impressive output from that 1080.  While I'm sure there is some objectively measurable difference at 8x, I would be hard pressed to actually 'see' it.  Take the frames vs. the potentially tiny improvement in IQ.

I see.. well.. I researched a bit more about gtx 1080 ti and they say it's going to be around $1000. Dang.. if it was $700-$750, I would consider returning gtx 1080 and wait for it but $1000? If it's $1000, I will stick with $600 gtx 1080. I mean.. come on.. gtx 1180 will be out in June 2017 and it will surely outperform gtx 1080 ti and it will cost under $700. Nvidia is becoming so greedy. Their price keeps going up coz they are dominating the market. I miss top line gpu card was $500. Now xx80 series is hitting $600-700 and ti series is hitting $1000.. omg.. I rather pay a little more and get titan x if ti is going to be $1000.

I upgraded to 970 for star wars battle front and because my current one was getting very old! was glad to see it was recommended for oculus. so far everything runs like a charm, so not sure why people always want to upgrade....well I do, but was the rift can only be so clear as limited resolution no matter how powerfull your card is, there is a limit. sure the pixel density helps a lot and I do use it. I just don't think an upgrade is worth it quite yet,
