Will the DK2 work with 90 FPS Titles?

Hi,

With the DK2 only being 75 hz and the new CV1 being 90 hz, what's going to happen if I try and play a game designed for 90 hz on my DK2.

I was thinking about getting the CV1, but to be honest, I'm back on the fence again and I'm going to stick with my DK2 for a little longer if its still going to be compatible and then jump in around June next year instead of straight away?

I am hoping, tentatively, that it will simply run at the lower frame rate and resolution.

If you think about it, there's little reason it wouldn't. These are the developer kits they're building the games on. They kind of *have* to work or nobody would be able to build software for the Rift.

Nowadays it will probably run in lower frame rate and resolution. I think that the difference will be only one: you will be able to launch the game on DK2 using worse PC than you would need for CV1 Rift.

BTW, not trying to be mean, but on a "just so you know" basis: 75 MHz means the screen runs in 75 Mega Hertz. 1 Hertz is a frequency unit, meaning 1 time per second. Mega is short for 1 000 000 (one million). Basically, what you wrote means that DK2 refreshes 75 000 000 (yes, 75 million) times per second. No PC and no screen will able to refresh screen that quickly. 🙂 Nowadays monitor refresh rates are in Hertz (for DK2 it is 75 Hz, meaning 75 times per second; definitely not 75 000 000).
DK1: Received DK2: (Jan 26) Pending => (2nd Feb) Processing => (3rd Feb) Shipped => (6th Feb) Received CV1: (Jan 6) Pending Rig: i7 4770 / GA-Z87X-D3H / GTX 760 / 16GB RAM

The reason I want to wait, is I want to try the CV1 before Purchasing, to ensure their is going to be that much of a wow factor difference to warrant forking out another $400.

I've seen so many different reviews saying different things about SDE, Field of View etc, I think its all coming down to your own experience now, so until I can try it, I'm taking reviews with a pinch of salt.

If the DK2 can run without issues, I wonder if the Oculus Touch Controllers are going to be compatible with the DK2 Camera's etc or do they come with their own camera?

The CV1 camera and Oculus Touch camera are the same.. but they're still better than the DK2 camera which should has a lower field of view (which means you're going to lose tracking more often).

It could be even worse for the Oculus Touch which REALLY needs a good tracking FOV and that's why the oculus touch should be used with 2 cameras at least.. So i don't think the standard DK2 camera will be enough or at least it's definitely not recommended.

That said,i've tried the CV1 at the oculus connect.. it's pretty cool, however you should not expect who knows how BEST things over the DK2.. it has an overall improved resolution/SDE/Pixellation that's still noticeable but better..

But the really win on the CV1 is the comfort.. Really lightweight and much more comfortable on the face.. plus has a really good microphone and integrated audio which i think are understimate.

Having all the hardware you need directly into the headset without any other additional cables is definitely a good thing.. much more than a lot of people think.

Other than that i wouldn't say there are so much other noticeable better things.. Of course the higher refresh rate helps to make the tracking smoother but overall the CV1 is what i said.

What really makes an HUGE difference is the Oculus Touch.. In my opinion Oculus is a game changer compared to the old Monitors.. as much as the Oculus Touch is a game changer compared to the standard Oculus + gamepad..

Really.. CV1+ Oculus Touch was just magical and the most immersive experience i had in VR so far (And i'm an HTC Vive Dev Kit owner which still is kinda close to the Oculus Touch experiences  )

My advice going on my past two headset purchases is as soon as you see the order page come up for the Rift buy it. Many did not do this last time, maybe held off for a few weeks to see user reviews and ended up with a 6 month wait. Even hours equaled weeks more wait on the day they took orders.

Even if you are not impressed, you will be able to sell it at three times the cost on Ebay (It is consumer version so you are free to do so). This is going to be huge and so will be the waiting list to get one.
