Just because I was curious myself, I got some USB 3.0 and HDMI extension cables. I used them with both the sensor and the consumer headset. They're standard 10 foot passive cables. They seem to work with no problem. Cheers.
Just wanted to add my two cents. Now i can't say that the difference is just the gpu, but I had a working extension setup gong for my first cpu, just used the blue m/f hdmi extender that people have listed previously works fine on my xfx r9 290x. Just got a newer build running an msi gtx 980, and i can't get any cable extensions i currently have to produce an image. will get sound with an amber light on the headset. Works just fine plugged straight through the original oculus cable to my gpu though. Go figure. Anyone got specifics on extensions they run on a gtx 980?
I've always suspected the card manufacturer being the suspicious factor here. Certain designs might skimp on components able to push the signal over longer distances.
First though before you dig too much deeper just check if the issue is USB (headset power) or HDMI (video signal).
Try the Rift using only the USB extension with the Rift plug directly into HDMI of the card. Then use only the HDMI extender. That should narrow down if your issue is the 980 or the USB ports on the new build.
If it is USB then try using different ports on your MB or a supported PCI card.
If it is HDMI then try a HDMI repeater that is known to work for some Rift owners.
Good luck.

I have a working solution/solutions. For a 20 ft extension plus rift cable. Total around 32 feet I believe.
Sorry for the narrative but It was easier to expand in order of how things happened. There is good info in the whole thing.
I would just like to start out by saying this is only the first post I will make, I have only done prelimelanary testing more will come in the next few hours and maby days. I have been reading this forum for the past few days and wanted to extend my rift so I could hang my main rift cable from the ceiling above my plat space after a close call where my sister nearly ruled an HDMI port and is 3 port out of my pc. Thankfully I still had it turned around from hooking the thing in. But that was it, I needed to find a way to get this cord out of the way. So like many on this forum and mind you at this point I had not discovered this forum yet. But at the time I purchased a 20ft HDMI extender (pasive) and is 3 extender (passive) and I knew at least for us that was pushing it in terms of length. This was bought on black friday so it for here Sunday from Amazon. Sunday night I hooked it up and nothing so I did some finiking and discovered it was mainly the HDMI cable that was a fault. So I called it a night and the next day went researching and found a few arrivals and this forum. After spending nearly all day Monday doing research I came up with 3 possible solutions. learning that it seemes wire gauge plays a huge role in succes percentage. (This is from reaximg an artical on social drop over distance for HDMI. 1. 20ft cable with repeater 2. 2 10ft cables with repeater after every 10ft length 3. And HDMI to Ethernet cable setup then back again.
So I purchased all 3 options on cyber Monday with the great discount and got them shipped so I can do a complete test on the most pickles solutions to this problem.
At this point in testing I can say that the 20ft 24awg cable with repeater is working and the 20ft active usb3 is also working. Although I do think I hear static in audio but visually picture is perfect.
Now that I have what leads up to the testing out of the way the next post will be strictly finding from my experements. They will come in the next few hours to possibly couple of days this will also have links to everything I purchased and weather it worked or failed.
