5m may be about the max distance you could do on USB 3.0. You may have better luck with USB 2.0 as the range is longer than USB 3.0. A repeater may not work, since Rift uses an odd resolution at 90Hz and I'm not sure if the repeaters are designed to take input like this. Though I've never tried so maybe it would be OK.

Hello there
all you VR people,
I had
difficulties extending my Rift with a 3m HDMI cable but after long stress test
I can tell you my succeeded results.
First my
gear and connection to PC.
1.
1st
sensor connected with a USB 3.0 extended (2m) into my PC’s back USB 3.0 slot.
2.
2nd
sensor connected direct (without extension) into my PC’s back USB 3.0 slot.
3.
Oculus
Rift HDMI connected direct into HDMI port of my MSI GTX1070 Gaming X HDMI port.
4.
Oculus
Rift USB connected direct into my PC’s back USB 2.0 slot.
With this
setup had absolutely no problems with tracking or anything else at all. But… with
the extension had a LOT.
As far
as a 2m HDMI extension cable concern, had really no problems extending the Rift’s
both HDMI and USB with an 2m HDMI 1.4 ethernet cable and a 2m USB 2.0 extension
cable.
With the
3m extension though I didn’t manage to have a satisfied result, neither with a Passive
HDMI repeater (without external power supply) nor an active (with external
power supply) HDMI splitter (1x2).The problems were, blinking stars
(artifacts), green flickering and after launching a demanding game like Robo
Recall for example, the HMD was flashing black instantly and then the
brightness was dropped to half with corrupted colors.
After a
lot of testing and a lot of cable changing I found that the 3m cable itself was the problem and
not the in between devices (repeater, splitter), because of it ’s poor quality (3-4
Euro price) although it was 1.4 version with ethernet support (3D etc).
After I invested
in a better quality cable (not the best but not the cheapest) for about 7-10
Euro (http://gmb.nl/item.aspx?id=6609)
suddenly the problems gone and with only the HDMI repeater in between (no need
for an active HDMI splitter). Steady bright image, with no color corruption,
and no artifacts at all.
As far
as the USB extension I have a 5m active USB 2.0 extension cable.
I hope
that someone finds this useful because I was despaired about this matter trying
so many different solutions (and spending money and time, and dizziness through
all these poor quality image tests), and I’m very glad I solved this.
Happy
gaming to all…

Sort
solution : Good quality 3m HDMI cable 1.4v (ethernet support) and a HDMI repeater with a 5m active USB 2.0 extension cable get the job
done. 😄
