Zuckerberg buying Oculus VR

Guys, this is really huge: Facebook is buying Oculus:

http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/25/5547456/facebook-buying-oculus-for-2-billion

I am really surprised by this new, since it is quite a different market (or not?).

Anyway, huge CONGRATS to the Oculus Team!

I'm so disappointed...

The RIft was the first project that really got me excited in such a long time! And Occulus doesn't even wait to commercialy release a single product before selling-out. And to Facebook. Come on... What an awful joke.

The news surprises me. On one hand, I understand the knee-jerk reaction. I guess it isn't quite clear how this will actually impact Oculus' goal. If I still get a quality, affordable VR HMD that supports a bunch of games, I don't really care if Facebook owns the IP or not. In my mind, I would imagine Facebook and Oculus are doing the merger because there is some idea of creating a "virtual reality" social network.

It of saddens me, because now Oculus isn't a purely VR based company with a singular goal - they now have baggage - a lot of it. But only time will tell whether or not the consequences actually harm the product.

When I, mention Facebook in my high school classroom, my students laugh like, "No one uses Facebook anymore". I think that Oculus will save Facebook from the slow death that it would have incurred. As a non-tech guy, I think this is great news. Considering that most of the people on this forum fancy themselves to be developers, I understand the trepidation. I'm just a consumer, and if they force you to log into FB to use it, just create a fake account. Duh.

Tell me, how would they make 'log into facebook' work on a platform filled with hackers, developers, programmers and those that don't want that to happen? It makes no sense what so ever.

I'm on the fence on this one. I hate Facebook and I NEVER use it. I seriously hope someone out there will fork off the current SDK because I will be damned if my DK2 collects dust due to FORCED tracking methods of Facebook's API's and other BS.

2 Billion is a waste of a sellout and honestly its not that much money and I bet 80% of it was only via Facebook shares too..

Good luck oculus team I was excited and now I have to feel embarrassed to even own one (If I keep my pre-order). Here's to hackers that will have Sony's working on PC!

Agreed, if this is not an april's fool in the end.

Btw, stupidest decision to announce this to developers.. (if true)

It's funny that last year Lucky was saying they wouldn't sell and want to stay in control. Ah well...
He probably realized that the Rift has some horrible side-effects (turning brain into mush, early Alzheimer) and decided to sell out while he was still ahead...
Of all, I would have expected Valve, or Amazon... but Facebook?! Well, at least Zuckerberg and I agree that VR has potential 🙂

I didn't know they sold out. Did you read the contract? Huh. Interesting.

Well, if nothing else the DK1 & 2 might help us iron things out before signing on with Sony... Bye, Oculus!

Will be curious to see what happens with DK2 (holding onto my DK1).
