Zuckerberg buying Oculus VR

Anonymous
Not applicable
Guys, this is really huge: Facebook is buying Oculus:

http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/25/5547456/facebook-buying-oculus-for-2-billion

I am really surprised by this new, since it is quite a different market (or not?).

Anyway, huge CONGRATS to the Oculus Team!

Yeah, and by then there will be a dozen competitors and I can switch to one of them. I'm more loyal to VR than to Oculus, and if facebook's money can launch VR into the mainstream, I have no problem with using them until they outlive their usefulness to me.

That is so very true what you said. Think I said it elsewhere where if anyone can mainstream VR it would be FB. Lots of my anger isn't towards VR it's towards what OR was supposed to be.

It's so comical people get so bent out of shape over the news. They whine, they cry, they cancel their pre-orders even. What a bunch of tools. These are the same people that pump gas into their car, pay taxes to the government, use bank accounts, use the internet everyday, own a smartphone, and do everything humanly possible to contribute to corporation's or CEO's pockets, yet when Facebook buys Oculus, they suddenly feel betrayed of what it may become??? You can't have it both ways, either you live your life and make other people rich, or you move to an island where nobody can find you... can't do both.

Haaaa... can't mistake the human race... the majority are just horrible people who are really stupid. Oculus VR is fine and will succeed as long as the team succeeds at making the best product imaginable. The end.

People afraid of change and the unknown:

Actually Facebook is not even close to be that "unknown" you spoke off. It is a threat very well known for things like changing polycies on a wimp, crappy design, no support, addvertising up your a**, data mining on customers and deniers alike. Let's face it. With age there comes denial to the unknown, but that's not the issue here, different audience. Most people here know exactly who they fear.

Facebook's long term plans for VR are unknown...

Give it a chance and see. It's not like this is the first company they have bought.

Best guess for future:

Oculus Side:

Game companies can still make games for Oculus that have nothing to do with Facebook just like you can for any piece of gaming hardware.

The product will grow quicker and adopt a larger audience than Palmer could have done on his own in 10 years!

Access to better hardware at lower prices

Cheaper end product

Facebook side will:

Release a Second Life style VR social network
VR cinema style netflix service or rentals (go to the movies with friends in a private theater in VR world)
VR concerts and sell VR tickets
Yes there will be ad supported FACEBOOK!!! Content.. Not required though for 3rd party dev just as it isn't required now.
Corp and Private services for VR meetings and retreats
Business services (telecommuting, VR office, etc..)
Subscription or ad based education programs in VR classrooms
VR video streaming
VR Music streaming
Averts acted out in a VR space using your friends avatars... (say a car commercial with your buddy Bubba all excited about the all new 2016 Crapster SUV 5000)

They will make more than enough money off the tech without locking it down, adding hardware based tracking, forcing ads, or cutting out 3rd party game developers not interested in using any facebook service to make their game. They know Oculus won't be the only VR on the market so doing any of that would doom their product.

Also people are more than happy to line up and be data mined by Facebook, Google, MS, etc.. without them forcing it on them. They simply don't need to go out of their way to spy on us when over a billion people willingly let them already. They are more interested in creating new money generating avenues like mentioned above.

Facebook programmers and engineers suck... who cares? Oculus programmers and engineers are great and they are the ones working on the rift and in the future probably integrating it with Facebook for service like above.

Relax... take a breath.. and realize they are not spending $2 billion just to lose it by destroying a product. They did it to improve the products they already have and create new services to generate revenue from other than just data mining alone.
Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Facebook buying the Oculus Rift! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!

So many overreactions in this thread...
VR is already arriving, with or without Oculus VR.
If the new owner (Facebook) does not fulfill our expectations, someone else will.
Oculus VR created the first VR prototype, and the world is interested now. Many huge companies are probably working on their own devices already.
There can't be a patent preventing other companies from researching and developing, as other huge companies are already creating their own devices.
I don't see Microsoft out of this business, and whenever they announce a PC device, they might have my money.
Oculus VR is owned by Facebook. So what? The game is open now.
Humble hint: No need to worry. Just follow VR evolving instead of becoming a fanboy of a single company.
And if you're a developer, you won't lack on opportunities, as there will be many devices, and the best will prevail until someone else creates a better one.

We haven't changed our plans. DK2 is still coming, and the consumer Rift is going to be even better. It's an exciting time to be part of VR, whether it's coming from Oculus or Facebook. This deal only brings us closer to attaining or original dream for VR. I think that's going to be a win for developers and consumers alike.

I agree with this, people stop worrying. FB will be there with or without oculus, it only means now that OR will become better and bigger, it deserves this push as it pioneered VR tech.

FB will not lock down Oculus, or change its development as it would be idiotic to mess with the platform in development.
I just cant understand all the negative comments about this..
Most of you have FB accounts, and now you all act as if it is wrong that FB wants to invest in the future platform? Help it become something that will change the world, only because of the FB sign? What, you will have to make an account?
You already have one!!
