If you watch this video, they are being asked about if it is a coincidence that project orpheus popped up after oculus rift

and they said " yeah it was the tech that wasnt available before and other stuff" just wat oculus said in the past

and that they want indie developers and stuff, just seeing the video it was like watching a japanese version of palmer luckey

and the sony fanboys over the internet claiing that sony was first and that their product is the best makes me puke

i own a ps4 and everything but oculus vr brought vr back fro the dead and they deserve all the glory

Hopefully the competition sparks more creativity, let's just try think of it that way... Casual gamers don't necessarily want VR anyway, so who knows how well it does? I bought a development kit to experiment, learn and create, it would have been a very expensive toy otherwise (that I can't use often due to the nausea :D).

Well obviously it's a ripoff, it even look similar. But that's a decent ripoff, and at this stage it will only make things go better for VR.

Actually Oculus said that they were in contact with Sony, and helping them a bit. They don't see Sony as a competitor. They WANT Sony to get on board with VR. But they don't want Sony to do it wrong and give VR a bad name if people get sick on Sony's version. So they want Sony to get it right.

Sony's headset will be for PS4, Oculus is for PC. There won't be direct competition.

If Sony gets on board a TON more developers will also get on board...making games for BOTH systems. It's a win win situation at this very early stage of VR.

I don't think that MS will make a headset. They have too much invested with their room projection project IlllumiRoom. Which is also pretty cool but an entirely different animal. It basically projects additional game imagery outside the screen filling your peripheral vision and giving a greater sense of emersion. But it's not VR, you are still just looking at a screen with no type of head tracking. (sorry, off topic a bit. ha ha) 😉

sorry but illumiroom is terrible, they will somehow make a VR headset otherwise they're doomed :?

If you bothered to look at the blogs of the presentation they gave you'd see they've been working on VR for a long time. Since before Oculus existed. If Sony HMD's existed first wouldn't that make Oculus the ripoff?

They didn't rip oculus off, but oculus may have either forced their hand making them start to get it out now. Or maybe like oculus it's just that the tech is now coming available to make it happen.

"Trivia: I had suggested to Sony that they try to hire Palmer Luckey before the Oculus kick starter."

Why would he have done that if Sony weren't working on VR already?

Sony bringing VR to the PS4 is a good thing for VR as a whole. Getting all fanboyish and defensive is counter productive. Leave the console wars to the xbox vs playstation crowd and embrace VR as a platform for a gaming revolution rather than a competition.

yeah I was gonna mention this but im not so sure its good to turn it into a "sony came first" thought process when the community is doing so much work :!:

Of course there is fanboyism here. But I think Sony entering the field is good and a healthy thing.

What would it mean if nobody was interested in entering the field? Would it mean nobody believes VR has a chance to take off? Now that Sony is throwing their hat in the ring, to make a VR HMD for the most widespread game console out there, it must mean VR truly has potential.

Lack of competition will hurt VR in the long run and consumers. There will be no rush to make better devices, faster, cheaper, etc.

The more talent you have working on making VR a reality the more chance there is something revolutionary will be discovered that everyone will benefit from. Perhaps a full field of view technology.

The more VR HMD's that are sold, more chances are display panel makers will give attention to this "niche" gadget and perhaps make an effort to develop displays optimal for VR.

Erm, actually sony has made a VR style headset (for movies) http://www.amazon.com/Personal-Viewer-Sony-Hmzt2-Import/dp/B005SCYZGA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1395528... (only available in japan but you can import it) it goes for about $700 and it just plays movies (some people do use it for gaming) but I've heard its horrible for gaming. (which is originally what I planned on getting before I heard about the oculus rift)
It seems that sony is actually responding to their consumers and is trying to recreate it for gaming.

I thought illumiroom looked amazing to be honest.
It's certainly not Virtual Reality, but it's not supposed to be.
