i've been playing the Witcher 3 quite a bit lately and i just can't shake the itch to put on my DK2 and enter that world, just like i do with Skyrim. i use Skyrim with Vireio and, even without the native 3d, it's just phenomenal. i can walk for hours just watching the snow fall sotimes...it's just awesome.
i realize that the Witcher 3 doesn't have a working first person view, so combat probably wouldn't work at all, but even just walking around in a 3d world would be amazing. i guess the cut scenes wouldn't work either for VR. Still, i ride around those cities and fields and wish so bad it could just step in there....my screen feels so friken limited now....it's frustrating.

anyone know if it will ever be possible?

I know they broke their promise (among other broken promises) about supporting full-modding of W3, and just went with some limited editor or something, so I don't think so.
They threw out all PC gamers out of the window on the basis, that proper PC version was not worth their money/time/effort, because it's better to go for the majority. This suggests that they won't seriously treat VR until it's in mass market space. And by then, W3 will be a very old game. Even if Morpheus became very popular, this game is 20-30fps on the PS4, so getting it up to the stable 60fps for the Morpheus, would be... well another "not worth the investment" case.

But:
- I'm not certain W3 won't ever see VR support
- I don't keep in touch with what CDPR says and does, so I might be the John Snow 😉
Not an Oculus hater, but not a fan anymore. Still lots of respect for the team-Carmack, Abrash. Oculus is driven by big corporation principles now. That brings painful effects already, more to come in the future. This is not the Oculus I once cheered for.

If I play a witcher rpg in VR I want it to made for it from the ground up, not a hack. Great game though, may have to play it twice once more of the DLC comes out.

Well, bringing a 3rd person RPG into a 1st person RPG has issues of its own. Especially a game like W3, where combat involves a lot of dodging, parrying and hand to hand combat, not to mention horse riding. 🙂 GTA demonstrates that. While cool for a while, it's not something you want to do all the time.

Plus, 3rd person games usually don't look so good in 1st person (textures being closer to the camera, modelling, ect...). No big deal IMO, but the gameplay at least will be problematic.

So basically, it would have to be 3rd person, which is OK in VR, but also has problems especially with open world games. That involves a freeview camera compared to constrained to safe paths, and that means avoiding camera clipping, pulling the camera towards the character, which would be jarring in VR to say the least.

3rd person games need to be designed with VR in mind from the ground up, VR FPS games have issues of their own, but imo less problematic.

In any case, with games like The Witcher, there are many things that need to be taken into account besides straight-up gameplay. HUD / Menu design, cinematic sequences.

Also, games like W3 requires a lot of GPU and CPU power, whereas VR requires steady framerate. It might not be a smooth experience with something as demanding as W3.

I suppose a tech demo based on the game where you get to explore the map in 1st person VR with limited to no actual gameplay would be an interesting experience.
DK1 FREAK...

There is a cheat engine script that lets you play in first person mode. Fighting doesn't work well obviously, but you can walk and look at stuff. I asked Raf about Witcher 3 support in vorpX and he said he finally got it working and it should be available in the next version released. So there will be that option at least. 🙂

I was going to do something like that for System Shock 2. But after getting it's maps loaded into my engine, I realised the game is far less detailed than I remembered. 😞
