little bit confused, where to start?

Hi all masters,

I got my developer kit today and want to test some demos on it so that I can learn how to develop for it. I connected it to my PC using HDMI. I have a monitor already connected to PC. I set my PC display to Duplicate/mirror mode and tried setting different resolutions. When I set resolution to 1024 X 768 I get red color in Oculus rift display with error that out of range. If set to any other resolution not getting any display or error.
Is there any one who can help me on how to start using this kit? :?

Set it to 720p or 1080p.

Make sure that the Rift is set as your primary monitor and then mirror your desktop/laptop monitor to that and it should all work fine. 1200x800 is the default resolution of the Rift but it can also take any other 16:9 or 16:10 resolutions.

According to the Oculus .PDF they recommend extending the desktop, not mirroring. Also Joe from Valve has stated they measured a significant increase in latency when duplicating. Finally, my own personal experience, naseau is reduced when extending vs mirroring.

EDIT: but yea, if u are gonna mirror make sure to set the rift as the primary monitor. Otherwise you may experience tearing in game.

Thanks for all the suggestion. I got it working now. The stupid thing I did was that I did not connected the USB cable. 😄

I have another question, when I see the video using stereoscopic player (as my company develops videos) I see a checks like pattern something like we find in cloths. Is it some setting issue? it does not look crisp clear as we see in other display devices. any input will help me understand where I can improve.

thanks in advance

That would be the screen door effect, caused by the physical distance between pixels on the screen. There is nothing you can do about that.

Can I just check something about Mirroring/Extending.. I currently have 2 monitors.. And they are extended to give me wide desktop.

If I Extend to my Rift, surely this will extend my desktop further, and will mean that my mouse will go off the edge of screen 2, onto the rift.. Is there a way to stop this, so that the display is 'extended', but you can't use it as a desktop.

Also, how do you move games/apps so that they are running on the 3rd display (Rift)?

My plan was to mirror my Primary monitor, which makes things a whole lot easier.. But I too read about "latency", so I am not sure which way to go.

The Screen Door effect. This is hardware, not software and has to do with the screen itself. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to get rid of it...there are mods involving paper bags and such to make it better, but it will always be there for everything you do on the dev kit. The consumer version should almost get rid of it, but there's much discussion around the forum explaining why it'll be very difficult to get rid of it completely anytime soon

From what I have heard regarding the HD prototype you actually have to strain to see the pixels, whereas in our current DevKit you have to strain not to see them.
If such a thing is true, that is certainly good enough for me!

not strain but relax & enjoy the demo/game you forget about the pixel/screen door effects
