when downloading new nvidia drivers what is best to do, do i uninstall the old driver or just update ontop? i have always updated to new driver rather then a fresh install
What Nvidia drivers are people using? I usually don't update drivers right away because they usually break everything for me. But I think I'm on the latest right now, 388.43 I don't notice any graphical issues at all. I have problems with my dual monitors and my games being found by oculus software, but that's more related to windows update and not gfx drivers. Has anyone else noticed any problems with the 388.43 drivers?
I always start by uninstalling old drivers and software (desktop switches to 800x600 but that's fine. Then a reboot. Windows (7) installs a generic VGA driver so I can go back to 2560x1440 then I run Driver Sweeper to clear out ALL Display software and registry entries (Driver Sweeper does it all for you), another reboot then I install the newest driver and one final reboot.
I've done this since the days of the Voodoo 2 and will continue to do so. It's the best option. Keeps everything clean - no random guff hanging around from old software clogging up my SSD, and clean drivers.
I use 3 monitors for Nvidia surround with an SLI setup. Of course performance got broken in 388.31 and isn't fixed in 388.43 so I have to sacrifice the new 2.0 environment.
I have 2 1080p monitors I use for dual display and one 4k TV I use as a monitor. When the 4K TV is off I cannot see it as an option. As soon as I turn it on, my displays switch over to the 4k tv.
A few times, after a driver update, the 4k tv went blank. When I turned it off it wouldn't switch back to the 2 monitors. And there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop it from automatically switching over.
I don't understand why anyone would design something to behave automatically without some way to override that behavior if necessary.

Nvidia has had this option build in for a long time now though. If you select Clean install in the setup program it will uninstall, clean up registry etc all before installing the latest driver right after.
