Yes have used both, the rift is well worth its price tag but the gear VR is awesome. My issue with the gear VR was my phone would over heat and die really quick so I always felt limited 😕 though currently the gear VR has more content including Minecraft the oculus on the other hand has higher quality content and a lot more on the way.

so with gear vr, you get immersed into the experience similar to the rift? i dont want to feel like im staring at a phone, but in a virtual world, and before i buy want to know how good it is at tricking our brain at that. What i like so far about the gear vr is thats its cordless and yes more content, and save me a lot of money . Kinna discouraging seeing only a few  titles out with rift, but experience immersion is what im mostly concerned about,

thanks

The immersion from using the Rift is better because of the higher quality, and that is the main difference for right now.
You can wait for the Touch controllers and for prices to drop, etc.
Once you get used to the Rift, going back to the Gear is not very appealing.

Another huge difference is that you're using a sensor to track your head, so you can lean in and look closer at things and move around in virtual space.

- The image on the Rift looks better.
The GearVR has a higher resolution, but wastes many pixels, because a bigger
part of the display is left unused.
- The display of the Rift also has a smaller gap between pixels, resulting in a lower SDE
and the much higher render resolution really boosts the image quality.
- The FOV of the GearVR is a bit smaller, but it didn't bother me and didn't decrease
  immersion for me.
- The GearVR also lacks positional tracking (you can't lean forwards or backwards), but
  this is not deal breaking
and you probably won't miss it if you never used it.
- The Rift has "god rays" in dark scenes with bright spots, which makes videos
unwatchable for some people, but it isn't as bad in games.
- Games look better on the Rift, but I never had a problem playing them on the GearVR
and some games even work better on the GearVR, e.g. anshar wars 2,
because the rifts cable messes with the turning/spinning of your body.
- Movies are also better on the GearVR, because it has no god ray problems and
the mobility makes it more comfortable to use. Although movies look slightly
better on the rift, because of the lower SDE.

I think the GearVR is the better device for watching videos and people playing games casually.
The Rift is the better device for games/people who want the device mainly for games and VR enthusiasts.
Better graphics, positional tracking and the Touch controllers, make the Rift more "future proof" and the better gaming device.
The support from big publishers like Ubisoft or Bethesda shows, that the Rift will get more AAA games, whereas the GearVR will probably get more indie games and mobile ports.

Are these responses serious?  I have a DK2, Two GearVRs (Innovator and the free one that came with my S7) a Rift CV1 and a Hololens.  There is no comparison in immersion. Being able to lean in and look around corners, lean in to get a closer look at something etc...  The immersion is completely broken in GearVR the minute you lean in any direction and the entire world leans with you.
There is not a single game or experience on GearVR that can replicate "Edge of Nowhere", Chronos, playing Project Cars or Dirt Rally with a steering wheel.
If you have a PC already that will support it, you are doing yourself a disservice not buying a Rift.
Now with Touch coming things are really looking up.
I only use my GearVR when something isn't available on Rift like live TV broadcasts. (Which are a blurry mess anyways)
If you have the extra money get the Rift, you wont regret it.

I guess that depends on the person, I never leaned in any direction with the gearvr, so the immersion was never broken for me.

Gear VR can play Rift games at 90fps? I'm sorry...strange question. The only thing the Gear VR is good for is video.

@hollo321 this entirely depends on how often you plan on spending in virtual reality, the Gear VR is mostly worth the clips and Dread Halls. But for that you would also need to buy a wireless controller.

Overall the Rift blows away the experience that the gear VR provides but if you don't already have a high end PC your gonna have to spend a few figures.
