A True VR “Home” Environment That’s Open to Non-VR Users

I’ve been thinking a lot about how incredible it would be if putting on my Quest felt like stepping into my own personalized home in virtual reality—and if friends who don’t have a headset could join in on the fun through their desktops.

1. A True “Home Base” in VR: Building on What We Already Have

Right now, when I turn on my Quest, I land in a visually appealing but mostly static menu environment. While it is functional, it doesn’t really feel like my space. I can launch Netflix or Horizon Worlds from there, but everything still feels disconnected.

Imagine if, instead of a generic menu, I started in a fully customizable “house” within Horizon Worlds. From there, I could move from room to room for different activities:

  • Living Room for Streaming
Think of it as a cozy spot for Netflix or YouTube, where I can arrange virtual couches, posters, or even snack tables—just like a real living room.
  • Personalization & Ownership
Currently, we have a static home menu with limited customization. I’d love a “MySpace-meets-The-Sims” approach, allowing me to decorate with trophies, art, or furniture. It’s all about creating a sense of belonging and showcasing my personality.
This idea would transform the current home screen from a fancy waiting room into a real, immersive environment that connects every app and social interaction in one cohesive world.

2. Desktop Access for Non-VR Friends
I also have friends who don’t own a headset yet, but they would love to see what I’m doing in VR. What if there were a desktop version—similar to playing a PC game—where they could still join the same “home” world and control an avatar?

  • Try Before They Buy
This would be a great way for them to experience VR before committing to purchasing a headset.
  • Community Growth
The more people who can access this, the bigger and livelier these virtual neighborhoods will become.
  • Accessibility
Some individuals can’t afford a headset right now, so this would provide an opportunity for them to hang out and explore.

Why It Matters

  • Deeper Immersion
When everything is connected in one VR “home,” it feels natural—similar to moving from your living room to your kitchen in real life.

  • Stronger Social Ties
A place that’s easy for friends (with or without headsets) to join makes the platform more active and social.

  • Personal Expression
Customizing rooms, showcasing collectibles, or simply decorating a space to my liking keeps things interesting and uniquely mine.

I’m not a developer, but I love VR and just want to share an idea that I believe would make a huge difference: one big, personal “home base” for all our VR activities that’s open to everyone—even those on a computer—so more people can see why we’re so excited about the Quest in the first place.

Thank you for reading! I hope this sparks some great ideas about bringing more freedom, creativity, and accessibility to the Meta platform.
