Oculus Utilities 1.24.0 not launching on Gear VR (S8) "Oculus Update Required"

Hi folks,

Just updated to Oculus Utilities 1.24.0 and now we're unable to launch our game. Upon trying to start the game, we get a message saying:

Oculus Update Required.

To learn how to update the Oculus app,
visit:
http://support.oculus.com

Details:

Unity 2017.2.1p4
Oculus Utilities 1.24.0
Galaxy S8
Enabled OVRPlugin 1.24.0 when prompted (and restarted Unity)
Tried with our game as well as a new project with a few basic settings:
  • Added OVRPlayerController to empty scene
  • Set Minimum Android API to 21
  • Set Supported VR SDKs list to include just Oculus

Where it DOESN'T happen:

If we use the default OVRPlugin included with Unity 2017.2.1p4 (which is reported as 1.20.0), then everything works normally.
If we use a Note 4 (yep) or S6, this doesn't happen.

Relevent logcat (for failure on S8):

It looks like our S8 is behind on some Oculus updates, but it's set to auto-update and has been on for well over a day. Uninstalling Oculus and re-installing didn't help, but maybe there are more individual services that need to be uninstalled?

Oculus VR:
3.26.0.1.874 (S8)  ---- 3.36.0.0.2743 (S6)

Oculus System Activities:
1.20.0-87532586 (S8) ---- 1.21.0-94770167 (S6)

Oculus App Runtime:
2.9.50 (both)

Oculus Home:
3.26.44 (S8) ---- 3.36.3 (S6)

Gear VR System:
1.4.03 (both)

Our S8 updated a bunch of services overnight and is now equal to or newer than the version numbers posted above for the S6. This still didn't resolve the launch problem however (even after a reboot).

I decided to uninstall every app that had "Gear VR", "Oculus" or "Samsung VR" in the name, as well as "Uninstall Updates" for "Gear VR Service" (since the app itself couldn't be uninstalled). I then re-downloaded everything via the Gear VR setup wizard, and now our game launches properly.

Not a great answer for anybody who runs into this issue, but maybe give that a try?
