Screen.SetResolution(16, 16, true) breaks TextMeshPro on Quest 2

Following a suggestion from the blog post https://developer.oculus.com/blog/getting-a-handle-on-meta-quest-memory-usage/ I set the screen resolution to 16x16. This causes Text Mesh Pro UGUI components to render incorrectly, as gray blocks. Is there a workaround for this?
