Launch trailer:
This may look like a spooky horror game, but so far it's more like a thriller and an adventure game. To my great surprise the game started directly on my Rift CV1 when trying the game for the first time - so had to take off the Index and put on the Rift CV1, as native Oculus drivers apparently had the highest priority - and Rift took over, lol.
This is a dark game, and it worked great using the Rift CV1 with oled panels. With the RTX 3090 I got solid 90 fps using highest graphics settings and Rift CV1 ss 2.5 (27 mill pixels per frame).
RECOMMENDED SYSTEM SPECS:
The game feels kinda old-school, like it was in development for many years - and maybe it has been. A few days ago the game was fully released, thus is no longer early access:

The game has great dynamic shadows, but probably is more of a 7/10 rating to me. 9/10 of Steam users like the game, and it's only $14.

Yeah, I'd probably still cover my eyes and hide behind some blankets lol. Game looks great though!

I'll test it later with lcd - see if the game still looks good compared to oled blacks - and I'll report back if I start to scream as the story and action evolve, lol 🙂
So far Affected the Manor (the original PC version, which is still available as a beta branch on Steam) is my number one concerning VR horror.

That game is looking fine with lcd, but you'll need the flashlight more. There are things and items in the dark which you can see with oled, but vanish with lcd. Also it seems like the game is slightly blurry with lcd, I suspect devs are using some temporal antialiasing. With lcd, selecting "Low" for antialiasing may be an option with fast gpus, as you can compensate with SteamVR resolution. I got solid 90 fps using res 400% with the Index.
Some shots with Rift CV1 ss 2.5:
Dynamic light is great

The following images are using Index res 400% - but are not through the lens, so you cannot estimate black levels etc:

When bpm reaches 200 you're dead 😉
I might go for CV1 with this game - there's no blur with CV1 and oled is great for such an extremely dark game.
PS. The game still does not feel very scary, at least no jump-scares so far... But it is improving on the horror - mostly due to the darkness. Did have a moment where I couldn't see anything (lcd), and turning on the flashlight a corpse was right in front me, lol.

I'm getting some Bioshock vibes from this, no? It looks great.

Maybe slightly from the dark graphics - but not for the gameplay. At least in the beginning of the game (I'm not even halfway through, got caught up in some Half-Life). Afterlife VR feels much more in line with Wilson's Heart - or maybe A Wake Inn - than Bioshock. Aftershock VR let's you pick up items like in Wilson's Heart - but also lets you depend on batteries like in A Wake Inn. Kinda annoying that the batteries only last a few minutes.
Maybe - as time passes - we're forgetting some of the true gems - at least I might. For example this is A Wake Inn - so much better graphics than Afterlife VR, even if Afterlife VR isn't bad:

In-game screenshots from A Wake Inn - the best lighting in a VR game ever?
Thinking about it, I should play A Wake Inn and not Afterlife VR, lol - so much to do, so little time! A Wake Inn is more scary than Afterlife VR, at least so far 🙂

That thumb on the 9th pic looks like it's going through it. 🤣 Jokes aside this looks like the next Steam pickup, no doubt.
