The game is here - might have some of the best VR graphics ever, and the gameplay looks awesome too:

Specs aren't for potato users though, this is truly highest-end VR:

RECOMMENDED:

    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: Windows 10
    • Processor: Intel i7-10700k / AMD Ryzen 5800x
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Nvidia RTX 3080
    • Storage: 20 GB available space

- but with a fast rig you can get an incredible increase in presence and immersion:

The day is much too short - and the game is getting some heat for that. The pressure is immense for gathering wood, food and drink in a day lasting about 10 minutes. This is early access, maybe the devs with extend the daylight later.

I haven't reviewed the game on Steam yet - because I'm not sure I'm ready yet. For now, I'm considering the game being 7-8/10, but could be so much more if I got time to explore the island. This review does nail some of the main issues:

For now, here are a few impressions:

My beautiful and deadly Groundhog Days 😉

My settings with Index res 300% and no motion smoothing in 80 Hz - does give me solid 80 fps with the RTX 3090

Textures are nice 🤗

download (14).jpg

Water and sand look close enough to the real thing

Unfortunately this is no romantic view, it means I'll be eaten alive in a minute 🙂

I love dying on this beach

download (5).jpg

Got some fire - to get me through the night - you're dead without fire

That light never gets old - well, kinda literally speaking as a day lasts about 10 minutes or so 😉

download (4).jpg

It's not exactly any kind of BFG9000, but it does get from A to B... Sometimes...

download (3).jpg

In another life I liked dogs...

I'm no longer a bat person

download (10).jpg

Yup, I do this voluntarily - I love giving free blood donations to animals in need! 😇 🤥

The freaks come out at night - if you can't see them clearly, you need that oled monitor 🤓

Dinner time - admitted, had much the same for breakfast and lunch! 🤗

The day ends so quickly I can't finish my beer before some dog eats me 🙂

Btw, the devs just responded about the too short and too stressful days:

"Hey everybody, we hear you loud and clear! I can confirm you that we are working on a patch to make the daytime longer, so that the game feel less stressful.

The Early Access version of Bootstrap Island is not content complete and will receive new areas, monster and items with upcoming updates. However, compared to the demo that we released last year, the EA version has much more content (areas, items, animals), new systems, mechanics etc. Some things we have been working on are not instantly obvious and you have to explore to find them."

I greatly dislike EA used as "Early Access" abbreviation - my brain keeps reading EA as Electronic Arts 😁

A few more photos from my ongoing active vacation 🙂

Hmmm.... That tree is carrying some very strange ... fruit...

The handle on my knife is rather stimulating, now I just need to find some ... rum ...

You can keep a vegan diet - I'm mostly into coconuts 🙂 At least until I find another gun 🙂 Note the detailed dynamic shadows

Finally found my ship - or what's left of it...

download (4).jpg

Getting closer - but not going to spoil anything, you'll have to go there yourself! 🙂

download (5).jpg

There's much walking - but with some "seafood to go" the journey is much easier 🙂

The game does save - so if you quit after having survived for 4 days, the game will pick up at Day 4 when you start again. But if you die, you start all over again.

Btw, the game works surprisingly great with the Rift CV1. That's primarily due to using DLSS, which uses TAA, and TAA looks blurry with lcd hmds. But TAA looks totally sharp with the Rift CV1. Also controls with Touch are better than Index, if the devs said they used Rift CV1 or Rift-S for this game I'd shout: "I knew it", lol.

And with oled, you now have night goggles when the dangerous night comes.

I had no issues using Rift CV1, it's not a lesser experience than Index due to non-blurry DLSS, better controls and especially oled at night.

So dust off your old CV1 and get in the game - it's as fresh as ever - and looks awesome using ss 2.0 - 2.5. I'm using ss 2.5, but I do get reprojections (not much off an issue with ASW 2.0 though) - with the RTX 3090 I might need to got for ss 2.0 for solid 90 fps with epic settings. Using Balanced DLSS.

Benjo just tested the game - and liked it 😀 He used the Quest 3:

The game supports Meta OpenXR, so all Meta users get optimal performance.

Okay, I might have to cave and get myself another game, because this looks absolutely awesome! I haven't tried any survival style games in VR yet, but I think it's time to change that with Bootstrap Island. 🏝

Thanks so much @RuneSR2 for always dropping great video and screenshots of new and cool games like this!

Make sure you smash that Kudos button!

Thanks, I hope you will enjoy the experience - this is kinda the essence of Virtual Reality. At least we get close to something very immersive, more believable/realistic than most VR games - but also frustrating, as this game will not hold any hands. It also has a few bugs, but nothing very bad, the game is a massive experience as it is now 🙂

As I just wrote in a reply, this game will not hold your hand. There is little help if any. But you do have a voice - a narrator - in your head, and there are small clues. You'll be informed that you'll die if you do not make a fire at night. There will be small subtle comments that might - maybe even semi-subconsciously - plant some ideas in your mind.

Like suggesting to be constantly on the move. Saying it could be a good idea reaching a top to get a view of the area.

So I did that - it took me 3 days to climb this small mountain top, but the view is amazing:

download (10).jpg

Top of the world - and yes, this is using Index controllers with full finger tracking

From here you can see the beach where you start:

download (6).jpg

The view distance is massive in this game - that's why an RTX 3080, which has 25 times more tflops (fp32) than the Quest 2, is needed and recommended by the devs - or even faster gpus.

I did swim out to the deep water - but didn't dare to swim any further as the main tune from Jaws started playing in my head 😬

download (11).jpg

You can swin into the deep water - and if you dare, do let me know how long you survived 🙂

The island is massive - and reaching the top of this small mountain, you get sort of an intro logo shown:

download (8).jpg

So clearly devs wanted me to climb this mountain - and the view:

download (9).jpg

This will be my next mission - I want to see what lies behind the volcano - even if it takes 7 days to get there...

download (12).jpg

There also could be something over there...

download (13).jpg

The jungle contains fruit, some very hard to find - but coconuts are usually plenty and easy to find. There's also animal life, and maybe more as the game is further developed. I'm looking forward getting back down there - seeing if I can survive going around the volcano...

Btw, new patch today - now you can do some fishing too 🙂

Just a few things - I noticed that the devs wrote for supported hmd:

"SteamVR or Oculus PC. Oculus Touch, Oculus Touch 2 or Valve Index controllers".

Now that reads like some very old text, lol - there is no such thing as "Oculus PC", and Touch 1 vs. 2 indicates to me that the devs have used some old Rift hmds to make this game. Again, the game looks surprising great with the Rift CV1 due to non-blurry DLSS/TAA and oled night vision. Games like this easily can take 4-5 years to make for indie devs.

Now, a few Quest 3 owners complained that the game would not load. One was using Virtual Desktop (VD). I'm not sure VD is supported - and the game supports Meta OpenXR for optimal performance, so no need for VD for performance (actually VD may slow you down in this game compared to native Meta OpenXR). In case of trouble, do not use VD, only use (Air-)Link.

Last things, visiting the shipwreck, be thorough. I think I missed something very important even having been there 4 times. Now I need to go back later today, sigh... 🙂

- and in case you wondered, you can eat the bats, lizards etc:
