Devs afraid of creating a "murder simulator"?

Have you noticed that a lot of games in VR involve shooting robots or zombies?

It seems they're afraid of backlash if killing people is too realistic. But it's still a game. We want the full "murder simulator." We're big boys. We can handle it.

Here is what the devs said regarding Bullet Train / Robo Recall:

The other struggle was balancing the fact that the game included a lot of violence that shouldn’t feel wrong to the player. They struggled with that during production.

"It was hard to make sure the game was fun but not a murder simulation," Jerome Platteaux, the game’s art director told Polygon. "So we made sure it’s colorful, it’s fun, it’s arcadey so people feel good coming back and not feeling like killing people again and again. That was one of the big pillars we had."

Sounds to me like they were worried the gamers would feel uneasy and not wish to make them question their own morality for playing the title. Of course we can handle killing realistic but still fake people, after all, it is just a bunch of detailed pixels, but that isn't what they are even talking about in my opinion. It was a judgement call with the game's users in mind.
If you really want to play a murder simulation, just wait or check around the big, vast, infinite web. If there isn't something out now, there will be. Patience- you'll have virtual stained hands in no time if that's what you want. Or you could always start your own project or share ideas with active developers.

Having killed hundreds of Skyrim bandits in VR, I can safely say I have no interested in playing a 'murder simulator'. VR definitely makes me even less likely to kill innocent bystanders than I would in a 2D game.

A VR version of Bully (from Rockstargames) would be good. Good to teach kids, various scenarios on where bullying can occur, and how to take the bullies down (and beyond)

There are VR games where you kill people. This guy does it with enthusiasm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91U2riFqMSQ

Yeh I reckon it will be banned.

This is why a game like Grand theft auto may be a long time in coming to the rift. It's also why we probably won't see anything like Carmageddon anytime soon.

Why would onward get banned?  It looks like VRs equivalent to Counter Strike.  Isn't the development even similar?  A guy essentially in his garage is making it in his free time?  As for the OP, these are exciting times for VR, it's in it's infancy and someone in their garage can make a game for the time being, before too long it will cost millions to produce a game someone would buy like it is with everything else but mobile.  Don't worry, I'm sure someone will make your murder simulator.

A VR version of Hitman would be intense

You know,a murder simulator is one thing, but I've always wondered how come we've never seen a serial killing simulation. I wonder how a studio would tackle that.
