Devs afraid of creating a "murder simulator"?

Have you noticed that a lot of games in VR involve shooting robots or zombies?

It seems they're afraid of backlash if killing people is too realistic. But it's still a game. We want the full "murder simulator." We're big boys. We can handle it.

Here is what the devs said regarding Bullet Train / Robo Recall:

The other struggle was balancing the fact that the game included a lot of violence that shouldn’t feel wrong to the player. They struggled with that during production.

"It was hard to make sure the game was fun but not a murder simulation," Jerome Platteaux, the game’s art director told Polygon. "So we made sure it’s colorful, it’s fun, it’s arcadey so people feel good coming back and not feeling like killing people again and again. That was one of the big pillars we had."

Yep a HITMAN style game in VR would be fantastic. But... them devs are playing double standards when it comes to VR by making sure they cater to the widest possible audience which means aliens, robots and zombies before any humans are harmed. Once the market grows then it's likely to change but I doubt it for a few years at least.

I do remember a review of the gta hack and they said it felt so different when you had to lift your arm, point and pull the trigger and how shooting innocents wasn't fun an ymore.

I admit that the first time I saw the Bullet Train demo, it made me fairly uneasy, but actually playing it I didn't feel like that at all. I'm sure in no time there will be plenty of games that the politically correct crowd will throw a fit over lol.

You know,a murder simulator is one thing, but I've always wondered how come we've never seen a serial killing simulation. I wonder how a studio would tackle that.

You mean like Manhunt???

Sounds to me like they were worried the gamers would feel uneasy and not wish to make them question their own morality for playing the title. Of course we can handle killing realistic but still fake people, after all, it is just a bunch of detailed pixels, but that isn't what they are even talking about in my opinion. It was a judgement call with the game's users in mind.
If you really want to play a murder simulation, just wait or check around the big, vast, infinite web. If there isn't something out now, there will be. Patience- you'll have virtual stained hands in no time if that's what you want. Or you could always start your own project or share ideas with active developers.

There will definitely be a VR murder simulator before they'll be a VR kill animals-for-anything-other-than-hunting- simulator.

Exactly.  This has been done before. Don't think it sells nearly as much as Grand Theft Auto franchise.  And for good reason.  If I was to see people get murdered, I can just turn on local and cable news.

I enjoy violence in VR as much as normal games. When I play games like the GTA 4 (not talking VR here) I will litteraly play like a lunatic, brutally assaulting people for the slightest of insults. I'll even smack women right in the face in some cases. I'll even attack innocent people for no reason at all. I would never do that in real life though, but that's another topic. I would however have no qualms doing it in VR. My point is that while I'm really a sympethetic guy in real life, I still have no problem with horrible actions if they are fictional. So I personally agree, don't hold back on violent content or realism for the sake of being politically correct, or what ever to call it.
