Doom 3 for OR

Hi There,
I am interested if there is any information leaked somehow why the Rift Integration of Doom 3 will not be ready in time for the launch of the prototype? Any specific technical challenges? Would be interesting to know why TF2 was ready in time even though John Carmack started on Doom 3 for the Rift much earlier...

Cheers,
Daniel

Does that work? Can someone confirm?

It works very very well on the Oculus Rift, but that's not the latest version, grab this one instead.

This version now configures automatically based on what HMD you have plugged in. It uses different .cfg files for different HMDs. So it's a lot more plug and play. You should still adjust the stereoRender_warpTargetFraction, and stereoRender_interoccularcentimeters console variables though. If you already set your Oculus Rift console variables up how you like, you will have to do it again after installing this.

It also fixes the head roll when you die, and has prediction that you can adjust with in_motionSensorPrediction.

Just extract it into your Doom 3 BFG folder, plug in your HMD, and run Doom3BFGRelease.exe. If you don't have a Rift, you can use the -vr command line parameter to force it to detect a Rift.

I don't have a Rift to test with, so if people want to have a look at my config files and improve them, feel free to post your changes.

Yeah, that is a bit puzzling. I figured John Carmack to be a "word is my bond" kind of guy. Very odd that he flaked out on Doom3 BFG support without explanation. I can only speculate that:
(1) Bethesda told him not to do it
(2) it didn't turn out very well
(3) Bethesda has him spending all his time getting Skyrim Rift-ready instead  well, a guy can dream...

Yea, when Carmack dissapeared my first thought was that he got in Big Trouble from some higher up or another. It's not like developers are known for having a lot of free time. Despite that, Carmack's support is mostly responsible for getting the kickstarter off the ground in the first place 🙂

Guys, i heard that doom 3 bfg will be supporting OR out of the box, but its not 😞 I have it on steam, i tried different 3d settings ingame but no luck. What should i do with steam version of doom 3 bfg to have OR support? Thx.

You have a whole tutorial to make it work right here, tested it when I got my rift, works pretty well

But Doom3 isn't a great experience for the rift imo, too old and too dark, I'd rather play recent games on it

to those of you that have tried it I have a question does Doom 3 have 2 POV's to give realistic 3d like the unity demo Tuscany house or is it the classic cardboard cut out effect you get from vorpx and tridef when you adapt non rift games like metro fallout or skyrim in 2d games to 3d

It´s real stereo 3d like tuscany with 2 povs. Except for not being able to see the hud and pda messages I actually think Doom 3 has one of the best rift supports. I usually play in godmode anyway so for me, not being able to see the hud, doesn´t matter so much. Great 3d, headtracking and neckmodel with very short latency.

That official Doom 3 thing fell through at the time, so they offered Steam credit or Oculus VR store credit. That may have only been for the kickstarter backers though, FYI.

In any case, if you do get Doom 3 BFG, there is a mod here to make it work with the Rift (and it's given me several intensity hours of edge-of-my-seat... intenseness!
