Really sad that everything decent seems to be out for the Vive
Doom VFR is not a good game. I don't recommend it.
Luckily, I have a Vive and an Oculus Rift.
After failing to launch on the Oculus Rift, I had to dust off the ol' Vive.
After setting everything up and getting settled into the game (on the
Vive), I realized quickly how bad the game is, and the assorted reasons
why I prefer the Oculus Rift over the Vive.
The game uses the
Vive controllers, of course. I hate these wands, I tell ya. I've gone
through several - I have three partially broken controllers in my
drawer. The problem is the touchpad - it is supposed to act like an
omni-button, where you can click anywhere on the circle and it will act
like a separate button, or a rotary selector. Well, this "button" tends
to break, on the inside - so that it doesn't register in certain
directions. I had to figure out which of my controllers worked properly
before I could begin.
So - the graphics are poor, severely lowered. I'm sure this can run on psvr, no problem. This is a bad thing lol.
You can turn the graphics up, but things still look a bit flat.
Doom VFR is teleport only. There is no full locomotion option.
The game is designed around the teleport, so that time slows down when
you activate it. You are also able to teleport into monsters to kill
them once they are staggered.
This is a bad implementation
of teleportation - there is no cooldown, or distance limit. You can just
spam the thing. The game lets you teleport on top of tables - it's
clunky and feels "wrong" in this game.
You are also able to tap on the touchpad in the four directions to dash
a little bit (a stick would be much better than a touchpad for this).
The story so far, is quite lame. The initial level or two or three -
very lame indeed. A terrible tutorial, simply teaching you how to
teleport, dash around, upgrade your weapons and your chassis, and then
fight a few monsters.
No, you are not the Doom guy, not even
close. It's like you are just walking around after the Doom guy left the
building, talking to yourself in a calm manner about the situation.
There is narration - in the form of puzzle/problem solving.
You're given a few 'lame' puzzles - like "find the fire extinguisher to put out the fire", or "crack the password".
In one room you can see a bunch of holograms, showing different monsters - I'm thinking "this is just a tech demo".
The first level is just one big circle. So very boring. A few monsters
strewn about. You just teleport around - kill a few monsters and then
get told what to do, in the form of narration.
Guess I gotta find that yellow key card, now where could it be?
Hmm, maybe that service drone could help me get it.
Maybe if I walked up and pressed a random button, it will go into the
next room, pick up the key and bring it to me without any commands
provided. Hey, whaddya know, it worked. On to the next task.
Lots
of bugs as well. The game does not feel finished. Poor animations
(besides the existing animations belonging to the monsters that were
already in the original game). Sometimes my hand will spawn backwards.
One time, I was locked in a room and had to restart a checkpoint. You
can only select things with your right hand and you have to be right
next to the thing to select it - if you have a gun in your hand, it will
disappear and in it's place will spawn a hand with a crooked finger
pointing all rigidly, with a fixed green laser pointer at the end.
Sometimes the green laser from my finger will just hover in the air
after I walk away. Sometimes, this laser pointer line will be crooked.
Many tiny flaws and imperfections.
I mean, the game might be cool if you have never experienced VR before. It's trying to impress you with such simple things.
Oh and no arcade mode, cooperative, or multiplayer - just one mode - Campaign.
Super lame.

They unlocked it. You can play it on the Rift.

So there's a new official patch out that adds official support for Windows Mixed Reality but not Rift.
Has somebody tested if it works with Rift? The patch also adds smooth locomotion, so I'm wondering if the game might be worthwhile now, but I don't know if it will even start on Rift.
