This right here is my first VR "Killer App". I had been holding off playing it in anticipation of the Rift, but I decided to make sure it was still playing nice with my setup this weekend. Frontier has really made this game wonderful in VR and it feels very polished at this point in time. Most of the menus now wrap around the front of you so they are very easy to view and look really nice. The ship outfitting view is a bit further back so you can sit back and admire your ship. It looks like they have completely decoupled the outfitting view so you could potentially get up and walk around your ship if you had a room-scale setup (this would be AMAZING).

The game seems to be very well optimized for VR as I have most every graphics setting maxed, although the planetary landings might still need a little optimization as I needed to back the terrain detail back to High to get rid of a bit of judder.

For those who are wondering I am using the latest Elite Beta branch with the 0.8 Oculus runtime and SteamVR is set up for standing-room only (not full room scale). You only need to run SteamVR the first time you start the game and then the game knows you are playing in VR so the DK2 starts automatically from then on.

Woohoo, I'm back in the cockpit! I upgraded my pc at the beginning of the year and didn't realize that SteamVR hadn't reinstalled automatically when I reinstalled the Steam client. The experience has a bit more judder than the old way (pre-0.8), but overall it's still working just fine until Frontier becomes compatible with runtime 1.0.

Nice! Glad you got it working.

I noticed the planetary landings are a bit more demanding than the space flight, so I bumped the terrain detail down to high. All my other settings are still on Ultra and everything seems to be running smooth.

I've been playing a lot of Elite in VR lately, I'm still learning how to do bits and bobs in the game, the only flaw right now is trying to select a course to a new system, pretty awkward but doable. I've found using voice attack serves very well with VR (less head turning).
During planatary landings/exploration the FPS Dips slightly, but I still have all settings on Ultra. If you guys have any pointers or advice feel free to drop by my twitch channel, usually stream most days for a few hours.

True, although the space aspects of the game should be pretty on-point at the moment. The planetary landings even brought my flux capacitor to it's knees though . It is obvious they still have some optimizing to do in that area.

One click back on terrain detail made it smooth as butter again though 🙂
