Full VR Support for IL2 Battle of Stalingrad Confirmed, March Deadline

"VR support turns out to be tricky not because it is complex by itself,
but because this technology and API are still relatively immature -
there are no beaten paths and in some parts we were moving forward
almost blindly. A large chunk of time was spent on finding new ways to
optimize performance to make VR experience more fluid, many improvements
were made in this field. Another big task we needed to complete was
adapting the user interface for VR to make it usable. For a while, we
were a bit puzzled how to make optical sights (like Pe-2 lower UBT MG
gunsight or tank gunner sight) function in VR realistically, and we
decided to show the gunsight only for one eye while another eye should
be closed (like in real life). In our opinion, Oculus Rift cv1 has
slightly better lenses and more effective usage of the display matrix
(pixels in front of you are placed a bit tighter, but overall field of
view is narrower). On the other hand, HTC Vive has more advanced
tracking tech, slightly wider FOV which feels less like looking through
binoculars, much larger possible play area (not like it is useful for a
flight sim though) but its lenses have visible peripheral moire effect.
In short, both devices have their pros and cons and if you plan to buy
one, it would be ideal to demo them both to find out which one suits you
better (but be mindful of a possibility of wearing a VR unit in a
public place after someone else who may have had red-eye for instance).
All in all, we like how VR works in our sim, it's on par or even better
than in other sims."

IL-2 is a very Grognard loving WW2 flightsim. If you want the most realistic dogfighting experience look in their direction. Alternatively, Digital Combat Simulations or DCS will become their direct competition once they finish up their WW2 updates. You can fly the mustang and already that is promising.

Next week it will be released the VR version of Battle of Stalingrad (and Moscow, and more) supporting Rift and Vive:

This is the BEST WWII combat flight simulator by far.

First question: Does it have a Native Oculus version? Or does it force you to use SteamVR?
Second Question: How the hell does that pilot not have a Throttle Yoke?!

LOL, that is Jason Williams part owner of 1CGS and lead producer.
In his defense that was from a recent trip to the Moscow offices. Likely did not take his own flight gear with him perhaps.

It is my understanding it will initially only have Steam VR support, so us Rift owners will have to go that route.
I have it installed now in preparation, if not for this I would not be using it at all...

Well, March is over. 🙂

I'm looking forward this because Warthunder doesn't have a single player campaign.

Well it does ... but ... it's kind of broken. Very unbalanced, some missions are downright impossible because they were balanced for "arcade mode" but not adjusted correctly for simulator mode.

For example, there is a mission where you've somehow got to stop a fleet of like 100 HE-111's and 12 BF-110's using just 4 Spitfire MkII's ... it's straight up unbeatable if you're playing Simulator difficulty, or even if you're just playing with joystick. It's designed to use arcades scrub "mouse/keyboard" mode, which is blasphemy and anyone who uses it should be ashamed.

Sounds good. Try as i may i cant get on with. VR in warthunder so this could hit the spot

What's wrong with VR in Warthunder? I was planning on trying it.

well its free so you should certainly try it.
as for what is wrong. i dunno. I play a LOT of games in VR, around 1500 hrs in elite, ETS2, AC, PCARS, FSX  etc etc etc etc

but something about warthunder makes me feel uncomfortable. i need to go back in and try again because as a game, i really enjoy it and in sim mode i can only imagine VR would be a huge advantage.
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

I now have all the maps for this & only played it once in 2d, they said it will be coming end of the week. Only issue for me in this game is it seemed very restricted on the number of planes in game, like maybe 4vs4 but in dcs you can create much bigger battles.

I'd heard they were supposed to be adding VR support for this quite some time back and then they went all quiet. Didn't know that they had finally added it. Thanks for the heads up. Will have to get this now.

As for War Thunder, the problem with that (well one of the problems with War Thunder) is that it has the same problem many other F2P titles have. That is, you have to grind like a real mother to unlock planes and the only real way to do that is to play in PvP matches. Right now  the only way you're going to be able to do that is to play Arcade matches. Arcade mode gives assists to those using joypads, so they have an advantage over HOTAS users. Try playing a realistic match in a newbie plane and you'll get your arse handed to you. So basically if you're new to the game, to get anywhere you'll have to ditch the joystick, pickup a pad and play arcade mode for a while to grind a few new planes out for yourself.

A real shame because War Thunder does actually look pretty good in VR. There are co-op and SP campaigns, but guess what, they're locked behind a grind wall. I'd gladly fork out full price for this without any of the F2P grind nonsense, but I guess, MONEY! MONEY! MONEY!

Yea, thats really probably the biggest setback of War Thunder. Though I wouldnt say it takes that long. You can get some pretty good Simulator games going at Tier 2 which would only take you maybe a day to grind up to at most. But yea to really get into the meat at tier 3/4 it will take a fairly long time.

If you had any dreams of flying a P-51D or a Spitfire Mk IX, either get ready to knuckle down to the grind or sucker up to the paywall.

Luckily for me I already had years into this game before VR was even announced and I can fly an F-86 in VR .. it is quite an experience.
