Full VR Support for IL2 Battle of Stalingrad Confirmed, March Deadline

"VR support turns out to be tricky not because it is complex by itself,
but because this technology and API are still relatively immature -
there are no beaten paths and in some parts we were moving forward
almost blindly. A large chunk of time was spent on finding new ways to
optimize performance to make VR experience more fluid, many improvements
were made in this field. Another big task we needed to complete was
adapting the user interface for VR to make it usable. For a while, we
were a bit puzzled how to make optical sights (like Pe-2 lower UBT MG
gunsight or tank gunner sight) function in VR realistically, and we
decided to show the gunsight only for one eye while another eye should
be closed (like in real life). In our opinion, Oculus Rift cv1 has
slightly better lenses and more effective usage of the display matrix
(pixels in front of you are placed a bit tighter, but overall field of
view is narrower). On the other hand, HTC Vive has more advanced
tracking tech, slightly wider FOV which feels less like looking through
binoculars, much larger possible play area (not like it is useful for a
flight sim though) but its lenses have visible peripheral moire effect.
In short, both devices have their pros and cons and if you plan to buy
one, it would be ideal to demo them both to find out which one suits you
better (but be mindful of a possibility of wearing a VR unit in a
public place after someone else who may have had red-eye for instance).
All in all, we like how VR works in our sim, it's on par or even better
than in other sims."

IL-2 is a very Grognard loving WW2 flightsim. If you want the most realistic dogfighting experience look in their direction. Alternatively, Digital Combat Simulations or DCS will become their direct competition once they finish up their WW2 updates. You can fly the mustang and already that is promising.

1CGS did a great job of implementation of VR into this sim, it runs really well and looks great!

Warthunder:  After the week it takes you to get it set up, working with the joypad that came with OR, and navigating the menus, you'll fly around in a couple of WW1 era planes in an engine from 2002.  So you give up on this.

You go to DCS World which has, for free, at least 2 cool planes.  A week later and you still aren't sure if you're navigating the menu's correctly. YOu've spent at least 1/2 an hour staring at the inside of two plane cockpits....and still haven't figured out how to take-off.  If you started with the Russian plane, and don't speak Russian, you're driven certifiably insane by this point.

All you wanna do is fly a plane in FRICKIN VR COCKPIT MODE...

So you then go "Gee, I could spend $100 bucks on Flight Sim Y and this add-on program", and then you can learn how to fly a real plane in a game engine that looks like its from 2006.   And in this game...well, you fly.
You take off, you land, you enjoy watching scenery crawl by, you brush-up on your IFR study books......so forget this.

Then you wind up buying that ultra-light flying game that came out a month or two ago.....and you play that instead. 🙂

Has this been released yet or not? Seems the dates change like the weather.

Its been released but i get laggy menu screen and when i get into cockpit the HMD is blank with sound but it displays the VR play on my monitor.
Think this may be a Steam VR issue.

Its out yes, & its good. I remember the fist il2 game years ago & it really has that same atmosphere.
There are some issues though the gunner positions are not working so well & there is no way to assign a curser to the hmd & hotas like you can in dcs.

In comparison to dcs I have the spit the 109 & fw190 & the cockpits are better imo & better interaction, but the game itself is more complete in il2 as a ww2 sim. clouds are better, night time is better in il2 but textures not as good.

il2 has bombers & its really cool just not working perfectly, if they perfect this it will be amazing. I sometimes do not feel free with movement in il2 there is a weird floaty thing going on.

Sounds like you have a problem if others have got it to run.

I played about an hour yesterday, but mostly crashed because it doesn't like my cheapo joystick.

That said, I had to select 'offline' because otherwise it just sat there saying 'please wait' forever.

I just bought this and started playing it. So far looks a lot better than Warthunder. It's also more realistic.

I like that they implemented VR zoom which I coudn't do in Warthunder.

I was a little confused at first but then I was easily able to setup my HOTAS.

If you're into Elite Dangerous like me, you may want to give this a try.

If it says please wait forever then restart. It will kick in. Not a bad effort. Does seem a little washed out in cockpit though. Anyone else get that ?
