Full VR Support for IL2 Battle of Stalingrad Confirmed, March Deadline

"VR support turns out to be tricky not because it is complex by itself,
but because this technology and API are still relatively immature -
there are no beaten paths and in some parts we were moving forward
almost blindly. A large chunk of time was spent on finding new ways to
optimize performance to make VR experience more fluid, many improvements
were made in this field. Another big task we needed to complete was
adapting the user interface for VR to make it usable. For a while, we
were a bit puzzled how to make optical sights (like Pe-2 lower UBT MG
gunsight or tank gunner sight) function in VR realistically, and we
decided to show the gunsight only for one eye while another eye should
be closed (like in real life). In our opinion, Oculus Rift cv1 has
slightly better lenses and more effective usage of the display matrix
(pixels in front of you are placed a bit tighter, but overall field of
view is narrower). On the other hand, HTC Vive has more advanced
tracking tech, slightly wider FOV which feels less like looking through
binoculars, much larger possible play area (not like it is useful for a
flight sim though) but its lenses have visible peripheral moire effect.
In short, both devices have their pros and cons and if you plan to buy
one, it would be ideal to demo them both to find out which one suits you
better (but be mindful of a possibility of wearing a VR unit in a
public place after someone else who may have had red-eye for instance).
All in all, we like how VR works in our sim, it's on par or even better
than in other sims."

IL-2 is a very Grognard loving WW2 flightsim. If you want the most realistic dogfighting experience look in their direction. Alternatively, Digital Combat Simulations or DCS will become their direct competition once they finish up their WW2 updates. You can fly the mustang and already that is promising.

If it says please wait forever then restart. It will kick in. Not a bad effort. Does seem a little washed out in cockpit though. Anyone else get that ?

I don't have any issue when I start it through steam.

Thanks for bringing up the "washed out image" issue. I just assumed it was that way because of VR issues. I looked it up and found that there is an issue with one of the Nvidia drivers. You have to go to Nvidia control panel resolution and then make sure that Output Range is set to FULL.

All this time I've been using my Rift with washed out colors!

Also, a driver update supposedly fixes the issue.

That's great but where exactly is the setting you talk about? I've searched everywhere and can't find an Output Range setting?

Edit are you talking about the "Dynamic Range" setting under "Adjust video colour settings"? I thought this was just for video if that's what you're talking about.

As this is currently at half price on the IL-2 website, I am tempted. However, three things are holding me back:

1> I have zero interest in flying any Luftwaffe aircraft, so is the cost worth it for just the Russian aircraft? (yes, okay, half price and flying half the planes... lolski)

2> It looks like it would cost quite a bit to get the whole package - 3 campaigns and whichever add on aircraft such as the P-40 etc (the impression given from the shop page on IL-2 site is that everything costs extra, P-40, Lagg 5 etc)

3> I also have very little interest in A/A combat - I am a groundpounder and have no idea what the scope for this is in BoS, as I only ever see reviews and videos depicting dogfights.

If it didn't have VR, I wouldn't bother at all, but I might be swayed depending on what I find out about those 3 points.

I mean, the IL2 Sturmovik IS a bomber .. so yea .. there's plenty of bombing missions.

I have a Thrustmaster Hotas X and it works perfectly .. well within your price range (you can probably do way better even).

Try and stretch a little bit more to a X55 or lower budget an X52 Pro. But the X55 is great and works fine 🙂 Mine does 😉

I have been a flight sim fan for many many years, so I have a good stick and throttle setup already,  and this one is absolutely awesome in VR! I have many hours in it since the VR implementation last Tuesday.

I highly recommend it for enthusiasts of this genre. It is gorgeous in VR!
