Google Earth VR - strange issue

I have a strange issue with Google Earth VR when running it I get a grey screen. Moving my head reveals what appears to be a white ! mark with a large white dot.
The screen appears to be rendering as if I hit the menu button, I can see it through a "clear area" around the white dot but behind it. Furthermore, I can see the representations of the controllers and if I move my head far enough I can even see the lines on the "floor"
Trying to reset the view only puts me in the original orientation again. The app originally worked so the only things I can think of that may have changed is either the Oculus Firmware, or the nVidia software..
