Half-Life 2 (official) Rift support

We just shipped a beta for Half-Life 2 that includes Oculus Rift support. To get it, open the properties for HL2 in Steam by right-clicking on the name of the game in your library. Set your command line to "-vr", and opt-in to the SteamPipe beta. This should ship to everybody in a few weeks.

Edited to add:
*** NOTE! The Steam Pipe beta shipped in summer of 2013. You don't need to opt into that beta anymore. ***

This port is a bit more raw than TF2 was when it shipped, so we would appreciate hearing about any bugs you find. Just like in TF2 this mode is experimental, so we really want to hear what you think.

A few known issues:

  • If you clone your desktop monitor to the Rift it won't work very well. You can work around this by picking full screen in the video options.

All of the convars are the same as they were in TF2 with two additions:
vr_viewmodel_offset_forward - Moves the viewmodel back so the elbows are harder to see and it feels more attached to your body.
vr_viewmodel_offset_forward_large - Same as vr_viewmodel_offset_forward, but for the Gravity Gun.

I find these convars to be useful in the game itself, so consider setting them:
hud_quickinfo 1
hud_fastswitch 2

Edited to add this:

The calibrator isn't up and running in HL2, but you can use the one in TF2 to generate the appropriate values. You should definitely do this to avoid eye strain and make the whole experience more pleasant.

  • Run TF2 and calibrate using vr_calibration.

  • Look at the vr_separation_user_inches convar and remember what it is set to

  • Run HL2 and set that convar to the same value.

  • Set vr_separation_toein_pixels to 0 in HL2

You should launch TF2 and run vr_calibration. See what vr_separation_user_inches is set to and set the same

Have you been able to play the game like this properly? I would guess it would make the game a bit more difficult and there might be parts where you would get stuck like the chase sequence or a place where you need to jump over a gap.

Quote: What this does is it sets your basic movement speed to be similar to a walking speed, you can hold down shift to run or hold down alt to sprint (suit sprint).

I didn't run 😄 into difficulties yet. I'm in Ravenholm now.

You can always try it ofc and if you run into problems, or don't like it, just remove the lines again.

Type this into the console: vr_cycle_aim_move_mode 5. It locks the cross-hair so you can aim with your head, yet still move it with the xbox right stick.

thanks for this!.

Actually mode 5 didnt do it for me, but i tried different modes and i think mode 3 was what was exactly what i wanted!.

so have a dabble with different settings (but dont try mode 1 - this WILL make you insta sick!)

managed 40 mins tonight, though I pushed it too far. I knew i should stop, I had the sweats but wanted to get to a certain point. Big mistake, took me 20 mins before i felt ok again after.

VR is great but you really must respect your body when it says enough is enough!!!
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Anybody know how to solve the orientation of the car, I get in backwards. It's a long walk.

edit: Yes, restart the game

Starting HL2VR Episode 2, once I get my first weapon (Gravity Gun), it is stuck right in front of my face, making aiming impossible.
Any idea how to bring it to it's orginal position? I did not have this issue with the standard HL2 version in VR mode.

Thanks!

Edit: I am not using the Hydra, just M/KB

Any cumulative tips?

Hl2 looks more low res than other apps. It says 1080p in the menu (and yes, I am doing 4xssaa or at least have it set in ccc)
but when I open a console it sayt something like 1920x1080 changed to 640x480. It still says 1080p....

It looks really aliased. Nothing like 1080p tuscany with 4xssaa. Then , only a pentile mesh is visible but not actual jaggies.

I just got rift yesterday and setting hl2 is not easy. any tips ?

Alright, I've got an interesting issue. I've managed to get Steam VR working, and I can get HL2 to display on the DK2. The main menu comes up in a smaller window, which I can't move my head around in, and I can start a new game just fine.

But everything's spinning... Constantly... I've tried a few chapters, reset the game, reset steam, reset my PC, but I'm always spinning counter-clockwise. I've also noticed that I can't move my mouse past the middle of Steam VR (I can't go to the right side), which I assume has something to do with the 2 lenses of the Rift? Is this a common issue?

EDIT: Typing joystick 0 in the console didn't help, neither did unplugging my controller completely. I've also sat at my normal distance (about 2 feet from the camera), and roughly 4-5 feet away, still nothing. When I had my controller plugged in, if I pushed my view to the right it would slow down the rotations, but not completely, and certainly not enough to play the game.

It's it me or is the game not honoring the ipd settings? It seems like it did with the old streamVR drivers that had its own profile system but the new streamvr does not.

I have 75hz and everything working except for terrible resolution.
The game must be internally rendering at smaller resolution. Live for speed looks way sharper

I didn't feel like it was that bad, especially with AA turned up, but it definitely seems to be not as high as some other applications. I really like when I am able to customize the render target if my system can handle it -- you get benefits even above what oculus recommends as the standard. HL2 runs at 200+ FPS so we should be able to crank it way up!
