Half Life: Alyx

Protocol7
Heroic Explorer

I am really looking forward to this. Sure it isn't Half Life 3 but it's something huge for VR.

Btw. for the heck of it I just tested HL: Alyx using my 16-inch Macbook's Radeon 5500M and I was positively surprised by how well it ran - minor stuttering now and then but perfectly playable. Low Fidelity of course, and noticably zero to little SS, but still far from potato graphics. Probably closer to PS VR fidelity. I think the aggressive dynamic resolution in Alyx is great for weaker systems, but rather annoying for owners of high-end setups. Wish there was an option to turn it off so we can see the real difference between various graphic settings.

Valve's main problem might be lack of asw 2.0, because the game literally becomes unplayable if you don't get fps:hz in an 1:1-ratio. Dynamic res/ss solves that - but makes benchmarking close to impossible as you said. I do love dynamic ss in Alyx though, it works perfectly for the gameplay - of course Valve could have provided a setting to disable dynamic ss, maybe they think that's not important to 99% of users..

This really was a great battle, although I think this dude plays using easy difficulty, at least I had to fight something like 3 zombies and use much more ammo:

I'm still in chaper 5, but probably very close to 6, Steam says I've been playing for 8 hours, but I'd say it seems more like 12... Did spend some time today studying carpets, wooden floor planks and ... fungus  But, man, those were some awesome carpets!

I'm slightly saddened to hear that @MowTin has trouble going forward due a lot of big black hairy jumping spider-things ... and the increasing horror elements

LOL, I didn't let a room full of giant hairy black spiders stop me. I pushed through. Must admit that truly terrified me.

I just finished the game. I'm totally blown away. I really didn't expect the end to be as good as it was.

I think the Ant Lions were my favorite enemies. I'm a Starship Troopers fan.

The gun mods in this game are just fantastic. My favorites are the bullet reservoir for the pistol, grenade launcher for shotgun, and extended ammo for the SMG. Also, the laser sight for the shotgun is great because it also gives you the path of the grenades.

I've been a gamer since Atari 2600. I'm glad I lived to see this day.

Also, props to Valve for not making this exclusive to the Index and Vive the way Oculus has done with its big games. I played on the Index but I'm glad all VR fans got to experience this amazing gaming experience.

This game actually made me forget the horror around me. We're almost certain my brother-in-law has corona. So far my sister isn't showing symptoms. I felt really strange last night but feel better this morning. Any of us can get killed by this thing. Nice to have something to distract us.

I have a new mobo and cpu so I'll install that before I play again.

Yeah, even though we agree on the shortcomings, it just really shows that so many talented people has put A LOT of time into polishing this game. It just oozes quality. Simply lifts the whole VR experience to another level imo.

Oh, I didn't know that. I was actually regretting wasting resin on that upgrade, but if that's the reason you could see the grenade trajectory, then it was deffo worth it 🙂
