If you mean a fully immersive experience, indistinguishable from reality, we are quite some way off from that. VR is still very much in its infant stage.
If we mean how far are we from living in a dystopian hellscape where peope do not interact in person and tech billionaires decide what we believe, probably closer than we would like.

I've no doubt that if you spend enough and have a large enough space you can have incredible VR experiences and when you spend regular, long sessions in there you can definitely feel presence.
We need more peripherals (which are widely adopted) to get to Ready Player One.
