How would you explain the VR experience to someone who has never done it and doubts how good it is?

I constantly get asked questions about why VR is so cool and what's so great about it and while I come up with what I think is a good explanation, I never seem to convince people that it's as great as I think it is.

How would you guys explain it? If you were asked, "What's so special about it? It seems like it's just a gimmick."

One of the things that make it so awesome is that in vr you able experience things which you can't in real life.
E.g. I'm not a diver, but in vr I can experience underwaterworlds.
And it's not like watching a video.....the fishes and plants react when you try to touch them....I was blown away as I tried "The Blue"
I'm not sure if you can explain how it is....best thing is - let them try and see by themselfs.

I feel you on this one! I personally let them know VR is not just about games... a lot of places used them to practice real life events be mentally ready. For example, future ER doctors! They use VR to feel how a real ER surgery, environment is like due to the feeling being so real. This is a life changing device that will only get better throughout the years! People that don't have certain body parts use it as physical therapy as well!

You can connect with people all around the world and travel without leaving your place.

We are all mad here.

You are the character, and your movements play out in real time in the game (for the most part).  It is a 1:1 first person experience, where as non-VR can only offer a fake 1st person experience that you experience from several feet away, rather than from your own personal first person perspective at the doorway of your eyes.

I always tell them, "You look at a picture on paper or a screen, but you experience a picture in VR"  and then I add, "Imagine some one took a picture of you a year ago, and you put your visor on, look at the picture, and you are in the center of the picture...and you can look around in the picture in every direction.  Well, you can do that..but you can also do it in videos, and in games.  Its like you are IN whatever you are looking at and living it as if you were there now."
