I would like to explore IL2 in the Rift but I'm struggling to get my X52 pro HOTAS set up properly. Could anyone of the IL2 aficionados here please point me towards a profile or a good setup tutorial? Appreciate any help.
I feel like taxiing your plane is too hard. Flying is easier than taxiing. It can't be this hard in real life or there would have been tons of taxiing accidents.
There were tons of accidents back in WW1 before proper training techniques were developed. It actually isn't that bad, once you get used to it. The first time I taxied a real plane, it looked like I was drunk and that one was a trainer (Cessna 172) with a steerable nose wheel!
In any case, check the IL2 forums for control help. I recommend making your own profile though, it's easier to come up with something that makes sense to you rather than trying to figure out something that makes sense to someone else. It also helps to focus on the basics. Have your trigger shoot the guns, a second and third button for bombs/rockets, maybe rocker switch at the base of stick for flaps and landing gear and then just leave it at that at first. Additional things can be added as you find you need them. Oh, and assign a VR zoom button. Put that somewhere really convenient, half your flying will be done with it pressed. 😉
Thanks for the tips. Of course the detailed setup is subject to personal preference but it's easier (and a lot less effort) starting with an established setup than starting from scratch.
I'm a real-life pilot of light sports aircraft but that seems simple compared to setting up the controls for this game. 😉 I'm glad I don't need to deal with guns and bombs on my plane in real life.
Head on a swivel, that's all I can really say for air targets. It's a lot easier for ground target though. You can pull up the full screen map with the o key and it even has your plane icon on it. The general location of AI units are marked, but it won't tell you if they are alive, dead or if they've moved.
