Hey folks, here's a demo of a jetpack control method and some gameplay experiments I've been playing with in Unity. In short, Super Mario Galaxy-style planetoids with their own gravity.
Video (I ramble a bit at the start, skip to 1:20 or so for the good stuff if you're short on time):
Windows Forced Rift (until I have a devkit I can't fully test the Universal code path, so in case it doesn't work this version is forced to use the Rift view mode): http://www.beowulf99.com/Unity/ProjectJ_Rift.rar
The level is based on the awesome Destroyed City Free from Profi Developers.
I don't actually have my devkit yet so if anyone has any suggestions on improving the experience please let me know. There's currently no gameplay outside of playing with the jetpack and the planetoids above you, but I'm working on adding some simple goals next.
It's possible the reorientation that occurs when the gravity vector changes might make you ill if you're using a Rift, be forewarned 🙂
Controls:
Joypad right stick or WASD - run, thrust direction
Joypad left stick or mouselook - turn character, and look up down if no Rift connected
Joypad right trigger or left mouse button - thrust
Joypad left trigger or right mouse button - thrust downwards (kind of a fixed retro rocket)
Joypad Y or R key - hold to reorient to world
T key - Speed up time
Shift-T key - fast reverse time
N key - Normal time-of-day timescale (by default it's faster)
Nice little start. Some of the odd gravity issues were interesting, but I don't experience them like others do. I was expecting the Tuscany map, so that was a pleasant jolt. Great map for easter egg hunting. Day/Night thing was cool too. Some of the building have gravity, some don't - that threw me off at first. I could see where being grabbed by a planetoid unexpectedly would spin some ppl's brains -but I'd consider that a feature. One to watch- thx
This one is fun and looks really pretty, when you get close to vegetation and move your head around the trees/bushes do some really funky stuff though.
Very fun, with a lot of surprises (pretty sure I need to go play more and find more of them). It does make it hard, though - I'm not sure what's a bug and what's meant to be 😄 The planetoids were my favorite - walking out till you're perpendicular to the ground, and then with your head facing the ground was a funny feeling.
I'll be interested to see the goals when you make them, so far this is a very successful experiment.
