Laughed like it was my first time in VR again - Lucky's Tale

A couple nights ago I found out that many of the Oculus Rift games in the Oculus Home work for the DK2, so I got downloading. I booted up Lucky's Tale the next day.

What first got me though was watching the opening. I always knew about VR storytelling but never tried a demo, so being able to navigate around those coins or getting a closer look at Lucky was like walking through that Tuscany demo all over again. I was laughing hard in absolute glee at how amazing and believable it all was. I felt like Walt Disney having Mickey Mouse first talk back to him in an animation. For the opening what really blew me away (yet again) about VR wasn't just leaning in closer or changing your viewpoint on the focal action, but instead seeing a window, wondering what's outside, and then realising "Oh right, I can lean forward and see more things outside of that window. Something impossible in normal movies and it just hit me like a moderately stuffed pillow just how many more possibilities and believability that unleashes. It sounds cool but once you do it and think about how the door of possibilities gets busted down, it's just like "whoa".

Then, of course, you start the game and when you lean into him he reacts to you! Waving, making faces, and falling back if you get too close! The gameplay is pretty nice as well, nothing too special, but being able to interact with the character like that was amazing for me. I know a lot of you know and have done some pretty sexy demos or played some amazing games, but Lucky's Tale gave me that VR magic again, something I hadn't had since early DK2 with the Kira demo, and before that since the Tuscany demo.

My interest is fully renewed again, and I can't wait for more things to come.

Something a little different impressed me about that opening. From other demos I've gotten kind of used to being able to lean around and get a closer view or a different perspective on things, but generally the camera would just clip through everything. In Lucky's Tale it's like your camera/head has some presence, as taking a close look at a pile of blocks I knocked them over.

I just wish there were more special effects like playing a game of Dota 2 in a massive team fight battle or Starcraft 2 with lots of units doing something.  What is bad is when people make games like those games but no one plays it online or the game play concept sucks.

It would be better if they just made Dota 2 and SC2 in native VR.  Company of Heroes looked insane with 3D Vision.  WC3 also looked unbelievable in 3D.

Hahaha, i had the exact same feeling as you when playing this game a few days ago. I didn't load this up for the first few days when in received my rift, as i thought it was not going to be good. Boy was i mistaken! Its one of the best VR games I've played, and i just couldn't believe how good 3rd person games work in VR. This game, Chronos and Eve Valkrie are by far my most favourite vr games I've tried so far!

This, totally. Didn't realise that until I played the game again.

Sounds amazing - i've never had the chance to even try the Tuscany demo, but really looking forward to it when the cv1 shows up. So far i've only used google cardboard, the ability to lean in and look around is going to be great.

Take my word for it, however biased it may sound, but you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Dude, you stole the words out of my mouth.  I just got the CV1 about a week ago.  Since then I have played EVE, Elite Dangerous, Chernobyl VR, and the crappy 1944 experience.  Last night I tried Luckys Tale for the first time and BOY DID I HAVE FUN.  I figured the game would not play well in VR.  Turned out to be the exact opposite.  It was one of the most happy bubbly gaming experiences I ever had.  Lucky has the potential to be the Mario of VR.  Lets just hope they realize how much we love it and make a sequel with even more content and more levels.
