Lava Inc. - DK2 VR Experience - New Gameplay Video!

Anonymous
Not applicable

This is an experiment I started with when I first heared of the DK2. I wanted to create an experience in which the positional tracking added something to my previous rollercoasters. So, I created Lava Inc.

Lava Inc. is a (fictional) company that refines lava. The factory is closed in the weekend so the employee's thought it would be fun to create some sort of rollercoaster experience in the complex.
The factory is located deep underground and has different rooms that all refine the lava for numerous purposes! I mean.. who wouldn't want to have a box of lava 🙂

The ride features several different track parts that all play their roll in giving you the control of it's speed.

Blue = You can control speed by leaning forward. The more you lean, the faster you'll go. You can even stand still and just take a look at your surroundings.

Green = You cannot control your speed. High falls and banked curves will race you through the building as you experience hot lava from up close!

Red = Brakes, you'll need them 🙂

Download:

You can download the coaster from ArchiVision's WeTransfer channel by clicking here. (~50MB)

DK2 is required as the experience uses positional tracking for controls!

Feedback is very much appreciated!

This is a fantastic demo, I absolutely love it. It reminds of Portal in a way.

I really hope you expand on this. Maybe make it longer with new sections of the facility to see.. Perhaps some kind of on-rails shooter....

One suggestion I would make is that you could control the speed on the blue rails with the arrow keys or WSAD or something similar, just so people who don't necessarily want to lean forward don't have to.

But seriously, this is a great demo. The graphics are great, the sense of presence is great.. overall it's just great! Love it! I really, really want to see more of this.

I would strongly disagree with removing the lean-forward as a speed-controller - it has two benefits:
- I reduces nausea, making the user directly in control of the speed in minute increments of movement of the upper body
- It is what the demo has that separates it from all other rollercosters and therefor its unique twist

Hi I am getting a problem with this gameplay. The two images don't match and I cannot perceive 3D.
I am losing all the immersion therfore since I need to close one eye. The desk demo shows correctly in this sense.

Edit: Forget it. Direct to rift mode solved it. Very nice but I get sick after some minutes due to radical changes of direction...

How about making it optional...?

Options never hurt anyone.

The leaning for speed is a nice idea, but makes me quite sick actually. It's not hard to imagine why. It's a rather unnatural and unusual way to control speed in a rollercoaster. Especially to such and extend that leaning will yield huge acceleration gains. It's also a bit hard to keep a steady speed like this, especially when you combine it with looking around or leaning sideways. For example, in real life you could lean forward and look down in front. This will result in sudden speed gains in this demo though, pretty much insta-sick for me.

It's a nice experiment though.

Thank you all for the nice comments and feedback! I just got back from my vacation in Budapest (Sziget festival, anyone?) and am really surprised by all these great thoughts. I'll make sure the next version (of any coaster or something) will feature the input you guys have given! 🙂

Any nice YouTube Gameplay video's online already?

This

Being able to lean forward to increase speed is an excellent concept, maybe you can give people the option of using a pad/keyboard if necessary, but please do not remove the lean forward aspect it is fantastically implemented, and definitely demo quality.

this stutters for me when turning my head. Is there a fix for this ?

this ended up being my very first DK2 experience (after a couple of other demos failed to launch), this ran straight off the bat for me and I was laughing all the way around, in a good way (I guess that's a normal VRgin reaction regardless - I had tried DK1 but it was many many months ago so at least I can confirm that 'novelty' feeling can reset if you leave it long enough). So I guess I won't forget this seemingly simple demo and the  it induced as I whisked myself around in the DK2.

I particularly liked the darker tunnels, esp the one after the spiral ramp up, as they were easier on the eye and restricted resolution of the DK2. Leaning full foward down that striped tunnel felt like flying, superman style... a nice first DK2 taster.

thanks

This is a really good coaster but i feel really sick on it - BIG TIME. I'm never sick on the other coasters especially in the corners. There needs to some carriage your sat in to help with the sickness. Fantastic though!
