Live for Speed - now with support for Oculus 1.3

Dear Rift owners,

You can now download a new version of Live for Speed with support for the Oculus Rift DK2.

The DK2 system has been well tested and received a lot of support from people in the Rift community. It is great being able to look around the cockpit of your car and the world you are in just as you would in real life.

The Rift support works in free demo mode, without unlocking the full version. So give it a go if you haven't already!

Read more about the update and how to get it on our website http://www.lfs.net

EDIT : We have released a new official version supporting Oculus 1.3

Hi scawen. Loving the rockingham track and update! Is there anyway to downsample and change the target render for the rift? In games like Dirt Rally I can use nvidia DSR settings to downsample from 4K resolution in the rift and it looks much clearer. It won't let me select any other resolutions in the rift mode in LFS though.

Also I used to be able to use sweetfx postprocessing to add some sharpening to the graphics when LFS first used the extended mode for the rift. This helped visibility a ton! Is there anyway you could add a sharpening postprocessing option at some point in the future? Thanks for all the updates again. LFS is by far my favorite sim to play in the rift.

@darkdeus - Thanks for the suggestions. I guess a downsampling option could be useful. Possibly by allowing the user to select a render target size inside LFS. Currently we just goes with the recommended render target size. About a post-processing filter, it could be possible to support the use of a shader to copy from LFS's render target texture, onto the final render target texture. But I'm not keen to do that at the moment. I'd rather keep it as simple and reliable as possible until see how it goes with SDK 1.0 and the CV1. Oculus are being quite secretive about that at the moment so it's not worth me putting extra time into Rift support right now.

...

However, I have upgraded our Rift DLL to use the 0.8 runtime. My first impression is that it works better than the 0.7 runtime but I'd like some more opinions on that.

It's available in our test patch thread by clicking the link below. To try the 0.8 DLL you just need the latest official version of Live for Speed - 0.6L - you don't even need to install the test patch. Just copy the DLL into your LFS\dll folder.

Hi scawen
Just wanted to say a big thank you for your continued work to ensure that LFS works with the Rift.
I take it you didn't receive an Engineering sample of the Rift or SDK 1.0 from Oculus?

The 90Hz vz 100Hz issue with Physics and Graphics running of the same thread is interesting and reminds me of the old Quake days, were a bug in the code meant that the faster your Process the further you could jump, lol.

I think you should update the Title of the Thread to "Live for Speed - now using SDK 0.8" as I didn't realize until reading your latest update

Hi Christoph.

No, I submitted LFS to the store before Christmas. but it still says "Under Review". I'm guessing they aren't very interested because they wouldn't make any money directly from it.

Although having good software on there can sell Rifts, maybe they aren't interested because they claim they don't make money on Rifts. 😄

Supporting the Rift can be frustrating at times, because of the way they keep everything secret and refuse to answer simple questions.

We'll be releasing a full official version soon with the 0.8 support included. I think it's better to change the thread title at that time,

hey scawen I hope you're able to get a CV1 and access to the sdk 1.0 soon! I've been testing the .8 runtime dll and it feels about the same to me. I've always been locked at 75 fps though and the tracking has always felt spot on so I'm not sure what differences there could be. I know Asynchronous Timewarp should help those with lower fps but I'm not sure if that's implemented yet.

Thanks for the test! Seems that 0.8 works OK for most people, so I'll put the 'B' version in the next Test Patch.

I don't have much hope left that Oculus will send a Rift or give us access to the 1.0 SDK. Live for Speed was submitted on 23rd December but is still "Under Review". Oculus don't really seem interested in simulators, although they are one of the best uses of VR.

Absolutely agree that simulators are one of the best uses for the Rift! It's nothing short of outrageous that you haven't received access to SDK 1.0. What are they doing?!??

The patch works well on my machine btw!
