Lost in the Rift (Episode 1, Horror, DK2 ready v1.10))

Anonymous
Not applicable

A loud thunderstorm resonates through the dark forest. You wake up. Where are you? Why are you here? What are these strange lights that seem to show you the way. You discover notes. Diary entries from the past. Are you searching for someone? Then all of a sudden you stand in front of a dark tunnel entrance. You overcome the strong urge to run away ... And enter ...

Playing this with headphones on is highly recommended!

Basic Setup:
Before starting the game demo, place the Razer Hydra base in front of you (with the cables facing away from you). Also make sure that the Rift is facing the same direction as you sit in. Now start up the game. Follow the instructions on the screen, when it tells you to press the trigger. Make sure you are pressing the controllers' trigger in the correct order. If your hands don't move, press the start button on each of the controllers to enable hand movement. Now you're good to go.

Controls:
Left mouse-button or "A"-button on gamepad or Trigger on one of the hydra controllers to interact with the environment.
"F" on your keyboard or "Y"-button on your gamepad or "1"-button on your right hydra controller to toggle your flashlight.
"B" on your keyboard or "D-Pad down"-button on your gamepad or "4"-button on your right hydra controller to recenter your view.
F10 to toggle the OVR Overlay menu (fps, ipd etc).
Escape and then Enter to exit the game.

Control Scheme "Sitting":
The good ol' standard. Use your mouse/gamepad joystick/hydra joystick to turn around.

Control Scheme "Standing":
Don't trip over tree roots. You'll walk in the direction you're looking in.

Control Scheme "Alternative Hydra":
Happy to try out new things? Stick your left hydra controller into your shirt and pick up your right hydra controller. You'll walk in the direction your body is facing, while still being able to freely look around.
(Be sure to press the "Start"-button after you've attached the left controller to your chest.)

DK2 notice:
I've tested the game on my DK2 in extended Display Mode, running the LostInTheRift_1.10_DirectToRift.exe. Please leave a short comment, if it also worked for you or if you ran into any issues or bugs.

I'm frequently posting updates and news on the upcoming "Episode 2" of "Lost in the Rift". Stay tuned 🙂

If you're stuck at the "office riddle", here's the solution:
Try walking backwards through the wall, where the door was, when you first entered the room. The idea is that you can only pass through the wall, when you don't look at it. "Rethink and take a step back" is meant to be taken quite literally.

If you want to tip me so I can buy more awesome texture/asset packs and stuff ..

oh jesus

decided to play it just before bed standing up, and I was absolutely crapping myself, was totally immersed in it, prob the most immersive feeling i've had in the rift yet, I was stuck in the room where u get the key and the note says take a step back or you will never get out of here n i couldnt get back out but I had to leave it there anyway, work in the morning haha but i'll play again tomorrow, absolutely amazing experience!!

thanks!!

Thanks for the great feedback! Means a lot!
Regarding the "office riddle" solution. I've added the solution to the first post.

mrmaffen, first off I loved Alone in the Rift! The reaction videos to that helped me get through the agonizing wait until my Rift finally came in. Secondly let me say my love for that demo is from afar since I'm too chicken shit to actually go all the way through with it or any of the other horror themed stuff, This is where my wife comes in. She doesn't really play video games but does love horror flicks and is always asking me if I have something new/scary for the Rift.

For me this is where my excitement and enthusiasm for the Rift and exposing others to the Rift becomes a grueling exercise in frustration. I don't know if I'm just venting or if any of this is useful feedback for you. I'd like to chalk up most of this to just my wife not really playing video games and not really understanding how first person controls work (or just me giving shitty instructions). Here are a few excerpts from her playthrough (she played with the hydra sitting down):

wife: ..I can't see anything, why is it so dark?

wife: (standing idle for several seconds) Where am I supposed to go?
me: Just follow the lights.
wife: But each time i get there it goes dark.

wife: (walking backwards for several seconds)
me: Why are you walking backwards?
wife: Because I can't see anything and I'm trying to figure out where I'm at

wife: (walks into the steep side of a hill/mountain) I can't move anymore. (wife continues to repeatedly push up on the left analog)

me: Turn to your left, use the right controller/stick.
wife: (pushes left on left analog stick)
me: No the right stick.
wife (pushes right on the left analog stick)

There were quite a few other things, too many to list here, haha. At one point I restarted and had to take the hydras and just walk her to the tunnel entrance. She stumbled her way to the office where she gets a key, but at that point she lost interest. Again, probably not useful feedback for you unless you can implement a somewhat on-rails version for the first person control challenged,

Anyways, off to try more demos from the VR jam and maybe work up enough courage to make a run through this!

Thanks for the detailed feedback! 🙂
I can absolutely relate to what you experienced with your wife. I've shown the demo to my father once, and he too was stumbling around, not knowing which joystick to use, or when to move the hydra controller itself etc.
The only advice I can give you is: Try the "standing" or even the "alternative hydra" control scheme. For my father it was hard to know when to turn ingame by turning his head, and when to use the joystick. With the standing control scheme, you'll always walk in the direction you're looking at, so that should eradicate some problems. With the "alternative hydra" scheme you even have the natural feeling of walking in the direction your body is facing. So maybe this feels even more comfortable/intuitive to your wife.

Ah and if you're still struggling with the "office riddle", here's the solution:
Try walking backwards through the wall, where the door was, when you first entered the room. The idea is that you can only pass through the wall, when you don't look at it. "Rethink and take a step back" is meant to be taken quite literally ^^

I'll add this solution to the first post, too.

Hi there,

After calibrating TF2/HL2 I'm experiencing an enormous shift between both eyes in this game (unplayable). Before calibrating TF2/HL2 I had no problems at all. I don't know how to configure Lost in the Rift, plus Alone in the Rift is still as it was before. Do you (or perhaps someone else reading this) know what the problem might be and how to solve it?

ok my xp here is:

First run: tryed with x-box controller....till in front of tunnel it works perfect...next moment, my flashlight were holding upwards, to flash heaven, can't correct that and quit game ...got the same problems sometimes with "alone in the rift"

Secound run: Tryed it with hydra...Flashlight controller with hydra works perfect...but can't calibrate the other hydra controller for direction at my shirt. Take the controller out of my shirt, and circled around my body till it worked....now i'm searched at another good holding at my shirt (cause of circling around)....turn the controller around till it's fitted at shirt ---> decalibrated after that....of course.

Is it possible....first fitting direction controller to my shirt....and then do a calibrition reset to this controller without touching them? Maybe with flashlight controller?

Sorry, you're having problems with my game. Maybe it's related to some of the stuff in the OR Config Utility Tool ? Lost in the Rift itself can't be configured. It simply uses the newest version of the Oculus Rift SDK (0.2.4).

I have never experienced these problems myself, I'll look into it though. Maybe the problem is related to your xbox controller ? 😕

You can, of course, use the Razer Hydra controller also with the other control scheme options (Sitting and Standing). As for the "Alternative Hydra Scheme": Put the left hydra controller into your shirt and afterwards press the start button on the left hydra controller. That way you should be able to calibrate it correctly.
The "Alternative Hydra" control scheme is somewhat experimental at this moment and isn't really the optimal solution I'm afraid. There currently isn't any way to "do a calibration reset" without touching the left controller, Sorry.

Gave it a shot (Mac OS X Lion, LitR version 0.4.0)--very cool! The grass/plants are better than Alone, and the rain/lightning is a neat touch. The big rocks have a spooky look to them, and I find the "trail of lights" pretty easy to follow.

I was using the Sitting config, with a PS2-style controller (Logitech Rumblepad 2). On that controller, button 3 is reset, Button 2 is action, and one of the D-pad directions is flashlight (or I might have those mixed up). Works fine, in any case. The sticks behave normally.

I did have some issues, in case it's useful to know:

1. The notes were a bit small/lo-res to read. If they could be doubled in size, or re-done with a bigger font, it would help. (Or maybe even if you could just get closer to them?)

2. The flashlight sometimes became uncoupled from my walking direction, so it would aim somewhat left--sometimes directly left--instead of ahead of me.

3. The reset function seems to be off 90 degrees: I have to turn my head 90 degress to the right, THEN press reset, then turn my head straight again. That gives me a clean reset.

4. Suggestion: make the headlight follow your head. It's SO MUCH better in the main menu room, where it works that way (I'm using the same method in my own game) than it is in the rest of the game (sitting config). Currently, the sitting config has four different directions you must keep track of in the dark: the direction of your body, the direction of your movement, the direction of your gaze, and the direction of your light. All four directions can be independent of each other, and it's too much. 80% of the time I have lost my light (usually it has aimed up at the sky where it can't be seen). This happens because when steering my body with the joystick, inevitably the light also nudges up or down as well--until it's pointed somewhere useless before long. Plus, you never want the light to point anywhere BUT where you're looking; and you never want to look anywhere without the light. So you always have to move your head and the light together--but the light requires skilled joystick work. The result: just moving your head to look around (which should be natural in the Rift) always requires difficult joystick gymnastics at the same time. (Or maybe mouse--but either way, it's an extra task added to the basic function of looking around.)

I got as far as a staircase before my flashlight would no longer aim in front of me, but it was fun. Will try again later!

Thanks again for the Mac version!
