Hey guys. I've just wrapped up a personal project of mine and and have gotten a few pokes at adding some Rift support for it. Which I'd gladly do. I'm psyched for all of this.
I'm currently investigating it on the UE4 forums but I thought I'd add a work in progress thread here aswell since I'm curious to use this as a test scenario for my next project and I assume I can get more feedback regarding the Oculus-part here.
I'm lacking a kit of my own to test with but do you guys know if it's possible to integrate without one? So far it seems like it isn't but I'm not that far down the rabbit hole yet and I'm reading up on it a bit more thouroughly.
As I'm living in Sweden I can't really justify the purchase until the consumer version pops up. 350 + shipping and extra toll/tax makes it daaaang expensive. 2-3 times the price more or less. I'll of course see if I can borrow one from someone in my circle but that's the old kit so I might not be able to hook it up so you can sniff the steering wheel ;).
I would love to sit behind the wheel of this mustang with my DK2. I am not sure you need the Rift to actually make a demo for it.
First you need to make sure that your scene is on the right scale and that it wont require too much in terms of framerate (let's say you need most of the users to be able to run it at 75fps in stereo). Then you can try to see if you can make a DK2 version without a Rift, or ask someone here who knows how to use UE4 to make it for you.
Cheers Manny! I hope to bring you something visually awesome. I actually managed to score myself a Rift today so I'll get started when I come home. Hopefully it's a quick process. It's not the DK2 though so I'll have to have it updated if I can get my hands on it. If it doesn't work automatically anyway.
Performance shouldn't be to tricky. I'm an efficient modeller and most of the bangs n whistles in the shots I can adjust.
Maybe you can find someone on the Assetto Corsa forum to help make it into a mod for the game. Then you'll not only be able to view it in VR, you'll be able to race it 🙂
DarrenM and muglore. Sweet! I'll look into it. I know there's been some interest for the model elsewhere aswell. As I work in the industry I have to be extra careful. Contracts. 🙂
Anyway, I played around with the oculus yesterday briefly. I had some issues getting the direct to rift thing to work. Their official demo worked but none of the other ones, had to extend the desktop and such to get it to work.
Also did a quick test with the car. It was cool and should work pretty well once I get to sit down and do a proper pass on it. (Was out for a dinner all night but had some slight problems focusing on the food, just wanted to get back!)
PS: Darren, worst case scenario, I'll probably make the car drivable in UE4 if i can be bothered. I'm kinda eager to start my next project with the oculus as a main focus soon. It's gonna be bonkers. 🙂
I got it working with the help of the VR Template and some elbow grease. Need to do some optimizations and fixes so it works better but yeah. Moving along. Next update might just be the finished thing. I don't want to mess around to much with it and instead actually create something more tailor made for it.
Note: Added a quick avatar to further ground it. You can also see your head moving around in the mirror.
