Ocean Rift goes DK2

This very cool demo has been updated for the new sdk and I actually got it running smoothly for a change. I ran it in extended mode and was able to run the "directtorift" version just fine. No low persistence, but it's smooth at least. Looks great in dk2. I had to use the mirror for the download.

this morning before work I had another dabble.

i was running direct to DK2 but without extending my desktop.

after actually extending to desktop it seemed to run far better.

this is the most terrifying VR experience I have had.

I would love a fully fleshed out VR under water game. Anyone remember sub culture?? something like that but where you can also swim would be perfect 🙂
Fiat Coupe, gone. 350Z gone. Dirty nappies, no sleep & practical transport incoming. Thank goodness for VR 🙂

Excellent demo. Everything smooth and very realistic, the Direct to Rift .exe worked first time.

One suggestion however, would it be possible to change the direction input to you moving in the direction you're looking rather than on the right stick?

I noticed I felt fine until I used the right stick to spin my head/change direction and after that I started to feel a little 'sea sick' and light headed. I've played Vanguard V that requires you to use your head a great deal and I didn't feel any ill effects after playing that for 15 - 20 minutes.

I think it's the external influence of the right stick that is unnatural as it isn't an input that your eyes/head can relate to as they didn't instigate that input.

Big shark scared the c***p out of me when it suddenly lunged from below....

I seem to be getting the 'Camera Out Of Range' message' and need to stand up and be about 2 feet away form the camera. Dont have this with any other game, any ideas why this happens?

EDIT: i got it and play it. its awesome. but i have same stuttering image when turn my head. frames dropping down from 77 to 40.

i have 2x GTX 680 SLI and a i7@4.5ghz

I believe having a SLI is a known issue to cause micro-stutter.

Hi

Out of curiosity is this demo still being worked on or is it done now?

I would love to see that Liopleurodon which is teased at in the demo (possibly attacking the shark?

ohh and the only other thing....

as it stands if you get close you can see through the creatures.

I still love this though!.

He's still working on it. If you scroll down, you'll see more details. Looks to be an awesome game if he can finish it.

This is a wierd one because through the time I spent developing and testing this new version I never saw that message. No idea where it comes from! I've only tested in extended mode though.

Yes I'm still working on Ocean Rift - in actual fact this DK2 demo is just an enhanced version of the original one I released last year. In the real Ocean Rift you can swim with Tropical Fish. Sea Snakes, Moray Eels, Sea Turtles, Great White Sharks, Manta Rays, Humpback Whales, Orca Whales, Manitees, Dolphins, Bioluminescent Jellyfish, various Prehistoric creatures and much more...the big creatures are driven by a novel procedural animation system. I work on this stuff in my spare time but it's most certainly coming!

The reason you can pass through some of the animals is that it's very demanding to simulate physics on schools of fish, very wierd when you can stop a humpback whale in it's tracks and very sickening in VR to be pushed out of the way! Some of the creatures in the dev vesion are blocked, or try to swim out of your way etc. but I don't have a universal solution.

thanks for the reply and, despite trying a fair few apps in the last couple of weeks, this one is still up there.... so please do not think i was being hyper critical. 🙂

Ha no problem - glad you like it. The exclamation marks in my reply are happy ones by the way!
