Open World Sandboxes in VR

Are there any?
  • Are there any that allow you to use the standard pre VR movement keys like  WSAD keyboard buttons, space- jump, C- crouch, etc, etc. I know I don't want to stand to play these type games, and I'd prefer to move myself instead of teleporting to a new spot.
  • How about 3rd person pov? I know there is much interest in first person with VR, but 3rd person is better for the open world, sandbox, RPGs, imo.
Thoughts?  Thanks!

You might wanna check out Vivecraft, which is a VR mod for Minecraft, if I'm not mistaken they have a seated mode for keyboard controls, and if youre feeling it you can still do room scale, it's probably the only game I actually stand around for hours playing in VR, it's pretty heavy so dont expect being able to put in a lot of fancy resource packs but the immersion and work put into the mod is so good you'd be surprised that its just a fan made mod, not sure about 3rd person view, havent checked if its there

I really dont want to see how many nakeds would be running around in a VR Rust.

Yeah, vivecraft is a good start. Despite being a 3rd party implementation, VR support(easy to install, runs like a charm in oculus) is solid with lots of movement options including several free thumbstick stick-based movement settings and a good amount of anti-vr sickness features. You'll need a copy of a regular(java) minecraft for this.

OR you can try official minecraftVR. This one requires win10 though and I am not sure how good it's VR support is.

Then there's also ARK: Survival Evolved which is now advertised as having oculus support. I haven't tried this one yet and I heard a lot of controversy about this game in general(lack of content, performance issues, toxic playerbase). But with no first-hand experience I cannot say how true is any of that.

I've been a long time ARK player who is taking a break to first play Conan Exiles and now Dark and Light. ARK seems like a great place to start experimenting with VR in a game I'm familiar with. My ideal controllers for this kind of game have been a Razer Nostromo and and Razer Gaming Mouse. I'll try this out, see what happens and report back. Thanks for the suggestion!

What I have zero experience with is adapting my game play to something that is VR, and configuring my controllers. Since my controllers are already configured, maybe I can just start up the game and use them as I always have?

As far as ARK controversy, it's very similar to the competition I mentioned above. It's a survival sandbox. There are no quests, there is stop being eaten, 🙂 build a base, explore, tame dinosaurs who do a variety of tasks for you more effectively than you can do, like harvesting different types of material.

A toxic player base is something you can run into with any online game. First of all, I like to build, but not fight other people, so I stay away from PVP servers, and then I look to my largish guild, to play on locally managed servers or I simply play my solo version of the game. There are no people A.I. characters.

Conan Exiles is similar, but it has A.I. natives who can be captured and enslaved to do your bidding. There you have naked characters if you prefer naked, but after a while you get used to it. 😉

Dark and Light have both animals and A.I. characters who you can interact with, like vendors. These games have varying about of Lore. As far as I know ARK has none, but taming dinos is a lot of fun, and I primarily enjoy building  and exploring, and ARK has outstanding mod support. All 3 games are pre-release, but ARK is most developed. None of them have dedicated quest chains like WoW, the  available lore is limited, consisting of written material, a couple of them are working on dungeons, but nothing like WoW's. However they are enough to keep me occupied, when I'm not playing Smite or some of my other new VR games. :D:D

Last night, I managed to get into my ARK: Survival Evolved Game  with VR and... it looked crappy. :s I'll try back later.
Now it's time to give Subnautica a go. 🙂

There is also VorpX which allows you to use non VR games in VR. I am not sure how good it is because I dont own a copy but its another option for you.

One to watch is OrbusVR this might be good if you can live with the style of graphics.
