  • Peaky Blinders is out on PCVR:

Get it here:

My review is here:

- and I took a few shots from the game:

Peaky Blinders is a Quest port, but has been enhanced with realtime lighting, dynamic shadows, many effects and high-res textures

download (20).jpg

Devs provided full finger tracking for users of Index controllers. The lamps provide realtime lighting, which you also do not get in the Quest version

download (5).jpg

Some rooms look close to photorealistic. Using a RTX 3090 and Index res 400% in 80 Hz with motion smoothing, I usually get 80 fps, but in rooms like this motion smoothing kicks in

download (6).jpg

In this location you can see steam from the boiling water, realtime lighting and some ultramersion textures. The PCVR version is 20GB, Quest is 12GB

download (21).jpg
The lighting in the PCVR version creates a great atmosphere. Also note the high-res ceiling textures

download (3).jpg
It's hammer time, and here you can torture a prisoner. Peaky Blinders is a game for adults, even if the violence generally is limited

download (11).jpg
I guess this is a virtual smoking and drinking simulator - and what's not to like about that? 😉

download (4).jpg
Let's get back to the PCVR textures - these might be the best wood textures I've ever seen in a game, Alyx included

download (2).jpg

The ground textures are massively enhanced compared to the Quest version

Here's another example of ultramersion textures. Note the tiny scratches and details, this looks very real-ish in the hmd and greatly adds to immersion and presence

download (16).jpg
The bedcover looks very real-ish 🙂

download (25).jpg
You get weapons - and note the high-res textures on the gun. As mentioned, if you're left-handed like me, just grab the gun with your left hand - like I did here

download (14).jpg
Btw - you do get to use the gun 🙂

download (13).jpg
Some more nice textures - I guess this serves as a warning not to put too much ketchup in your hotdog, it easily becomes a challenge eating it nicely 🙂

Unavngivet.JPG
Another example of the high-res textures. Throughout the game you can collect items like these cards and more. You have a journal helping you to keep track of objectives and items

download (12).jpg
Note that the cup is quite round. You'll find some Quest assets in the game, but it's no big deal. Larger places can look barren and does reveal the Quest origin

download (10).jpg
Nice textures and enough polys - I should be careful not to push the nice vase... 🤔 😈

download (23).jpg
Draw distance isn't bad. The fire creates a realtime light source, which you do not get in the Quest version

download (27).jpg
Another example of great draw distance

download (17).jpg
As mentioned, devs did include dynamic shadows as shown here

download (19).jpg
download (29).jpg
On the two images above, npcs cast dynamic shadows. Note the semi-transparent glass too in the first of the two images

download (18).jpg
Due to realtime lighting, this room is much more illuminated than in the Quest version

download (7).jpg

download (28).jpg

Awesome realtime lighting makes all the difference - like shown in the two above images

download (9).jpg

Fog effects and realtime lighting - and the high res textures - greatly improve immersion and presence

download (1).jpg

download (15).jpg

Npcs are sufficiently detailed. Even if not the best-looking VR npcs ever, I've seen a lot worse

download (30).jpg
Maybe a boring shot, but note how the water reflects the surroundings. The game is neither awesome nor bad - I'll rated it 7.5/10 (good/great) with the Index - and it's only $20

Btw, not sure this game makes you feel much like Gordon Freeman - but maybe a tiny bit, lol

you've got good taste in finding atmospheric PCVR games @RuneSR2 that looks awesome.

My next purchase is going to have to be Vertigo 2 as I loved the first one. Considering that 7th guest too

Quest 2, Quest 3, PCVR, Meta Wayfarer

Thanks, and that sounds like great choices. Even if Peaky Blinders has many pros, it's no match for Vertigo 2 and 7th Guest.

Vertigo 2 is the new reference for VR shooters, and 7th Guest is the new reference for puzzle games. I'd say 7th Guest even beats Room VR, and Room VR is indeed a mighty opponent 🙂

@RuneSR2  Looks very nice mate and I'll be buying it soon (probably tomorrow because it's time to go to bed now).

I kinda think it's going to look pretty nice with my Vive Pro 1's amoled screens, Etsy Gear VR lens mod, and Index controllers.  Also, performance shouldn't be a problem with my i9 13900k/rtx4090, lol!  Cheers mate.

i9 13900K water cooled, RTX4090, Z790 MB w/wifi6e, 32Gb 6400 ram, 2x2TB SSD, 1000W PSU, Win 11, QPro, Q3, w/Link and Air Link, Vive Pro1 with 2x2.0 base stations, Etsy lens mod and Index Controllers

No doubt an RTX 4090 is not needed - but you may be able to use Vive Pro res 400 or 500 % with no frame drops 🙂

The game should work fine with much lower res using a GTX 1080 or so - but users of Meta hmds will experience a performance drop due to the game only supporting native SteamVR drivers - no OpenXR or native Meta/Oculus driver support for now (which is weird, devs might not know how much this impacts performance).

Btw, there is this problem of using OpenXR that the Steam hours counter does not work with Oculus OpenXR. I could play through Hubris using CV1, and Steam registered no minutes of playtime. In that way I would be able to put 20 hours in the game, complete the game, and refund within 14 days.

This issue may cause devs to avoid OpenXR in Steam games, if they are aware of this issue...

@RuneSR2  Strange that SteamVR doesn't track the Oculus OpenXR runtime.  I'm sure that Steam will eventually fix that in the near future.  Hopefully they will improve their current StteamVR Open XR while they are at it, lol!

I gotta say that Peaky Blinders looked very good with my VP1 but not being a Peaky Blinder fan I couldn't get into this game.  I just tried the demo so there wasn't any need to refund anything.  I kinda found a lot of the characters looked a bit too cartoony and gooney for my taste.  Also, as an ex-smoker (quit 15 years ago) I wasn't thrilled to smoke in VR, lol!  I have enjoyed 7th Guest a lot and will probably try out Vertigo 2 if it comes out on a steam sale.  Also looking forward to Arizona Sunshine 2.  Cheers mate.

Yes, you got the Quest low-poly models in Peaky Blinders, but textures for clothes have been nicely enhanced. I've never seen the show, but I can see Peaky Blinders is on Netflix, maybe I'll check it out.

Peaky Blinders has the same limited gameplay as the Quest version, and the Quest version did not get great ratings - many found it boring. I'm still enjoying Peaky Blinders, but it's no match for 7th Guest 🙂

I do love the trend of seeing ultramersion textures in many new PCVR games - I'd say Peaky Blinders, when textures are at their very best, even beats Alyx.

Btw, I just noticed this comment on Reddit:

"Peaky blinders the king's ransom uses ASW also on Q2. I think that runs at 72hz which is very it feels very janky at times".

I was thinking Peaky Blinders looked better than usual Quest ports - upgrading the 36 fps Quest version to run at solid 80 - 144 fps, adding real-time lighting, fog/steam/smoke effects, dynamic shadows etc, makes me appreciate the PCVR version even more.

And devs do not want to make the Quest version look bad, and tell no one how much they improved the PCVR version. And now no one buys the PCVR version, because all think it's another low-end Quest port... Sigh...

For some reason ir doesn't work playable if you with option to use Air Link, VirtualDesktop or Steam Link. Image is tearing/lagging/jittering all the time.

Specs:
GPU: 6900 XT (16GB VRAM)
CPU: i7 8700k with oc to 4.9GHz
RAM: 32GB dual channel 3600MHz (no oc)
SSD: M.2 ADATA XPG Gammix S50 Lite 1TB (it is fine)
Router: Asus RT-AX82U
Pc connected with LAN

Btw when switched to Oculus Link with usb cable - all worked fine. Funny thing that while image tearing - perfomance overlays, steam logging, just everything shown that all great, fps is solid, frametimes are stable, no spikes, no anything. No latency but it just didn't work. Was about to refund but when I found that it at least works with cable decided to keep it.

I'm using the Valve Index for this game - no issues at all and awesome performance since the Index has native SteamVR driver support - and unfortunately this game does nor support any native Meta drivers like OpenXR or native Oculus drivers.
